NASA has released new satellite images showing that Mexico City is sinking at an alarming rate of nearly ten inches per year. The sprawling metropolis, covering about 7,800 square kilometers and home to roughly 22 million people, was built on the surface of an ancient lake. Many of its central streets were once canals, and the city’s foundation is now suffering from severe subsidence.

According to NASA’s latest report, some areas, including the main airport and the Angel of Independence monument, are sinking at an average rate of 0.78 inches per month. Geophysicist Enrique Cabral from the National Autonomous University of Mexico noted that the city has sunk more than 39 feet in less than a century due to excessive groundwater extraction and urban development. The shrinking aquifer has also caused a persistent water shortage.

For decades, authorities have largely ignored the problem except for stabilizing foundations under landmarks such as the Metropolitan Cathedral. Recently, as the water crisis worsens, the government has begun funding further research into the issue.

The historic saline Jhorjhari canal flowing through the southern part of Sitakunda municipality in Chattogram has become nearly dead due to encroachment, pollution, and mismanagement. Once a vital natural drainage route carrying mountain runoff from Chandranath Hill to the sea, the canal has lost its navigability and flow, causing severe waterlogging across the area during monsoon rains.

Local residents report that influential groups have occupied sections of the 7.5-kilometer canal, constructing shops, warehouses, and houses along its banks. Unplanned dumping of waste has filled the canal bed, blocking water flow and leading to prolonged flooding in low-lying areas such as Chaudhurypara, Hasan Gomosta Mosque area, Amirabad, and West Mirabad. Homes, roads, and even government offices, including the Upazila Executive Officer’s residence, have been inundated, raising concerns over damage to official documents.

Farmers say hundreds of acres of crops are destroyed annually due to waterlogging, harming the local economy. The Upazila Executive Officer stated that proposals have been sent under the national canal excavation program to restore the Jhorjhari and other canals once funding is approved.

An elderly woman was allegedly killed by farm workers in Chandina upazila of Cumilla early Sunday, May 3, 2026. According to local reports, four laborers from Rangpur, who had come to harvest paddy, are accused of suffocating 75-year-old house owner Samiran Begum to death at her home in Olipur village under Suhilpur Union. After the killing, the suspects reportedly fled with gold ornaments and about 70,000 taka in cash.

The incident occurred amid a shortage of local harvest workers caused by heavy rainfall, prompting farmers in Chandina to hire laborers from Rangpur. The victim’s son stated that five workers had been brought in four days earlier, but one fled the previous evening after stealing a mobile phone. The remaining four allegedly committed the murder and robbery that night.

Chandina Police Station Officer-in-Charge Atikur Rahman said the matter is under investigation and legal action will be taken against those responsible.

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General and former MP Mia Golam Porwar expressed deep sorrow and grief over the death of eight construction workers in a road accident in Sylhet’s Dakshin Surma area. The collision between a truck and a pickup van occurred early Sunday morning in the Telibazar area, leaving many others injured. In a condolence message sent to the media, Porwar described the incident as tragic and heartbreaking, especially as the workers were on their way to work.

He extended condolences to the bereaved families, prayed for the departed souls, and wished a speedy recovery for the injured. Porwar noted that road accidents are increasing at an alarming rate across the country and called for effective measures to restore discipline on roads, ensure vehicle fitness, and promote responsible driving behavior.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is scheduled to visit Rome and the Vatican this week, according to an Italian government source. Political scientist Professor Dilara Chowdhury has warned that the Prime Minister could become authoritarian if the government fails to implement the July Charter and related ordinances. Chowdhury criticized the ruling party for reversing institutional reforms related to enforced disappearances, human rights, the Anti-Corruption Commission, and the judiciary that were outlined in the July Charter. She said that despite earlier commitments, no progress had been made on forming councils to ensure independent appointments to constitutional bodies. She also alleged that Bangladesh’s elite, civil-military, and bureaucratic groups were obstructing reform to retain power.

She further stated that if the government continues to ignore the July Charter and referendum commitments, it risks reverting to the authoritarian tendencies of previous administrations.

Speakers at a national convention in Dhaka on Sunday accused the BNP-led government of deceiving the public over promised reforms. The event, organized by the National Citizen Party’s Reform Implementation Committee at the Diploma Engineers Institute, focused on energy, economy, human rights, and constitutional reform. Participants alleged that the government had abandoned its pre-election commitments and was moving toward authoritarianism by reversing key institutional reforms.

National Citizen Party (NCP) Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain has accused the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) of avoiding necessary reforms under the pretext of power politics. Speaking on Sunday, May 3, at a national convention on energy, economic reform, and referendum held at the Diploma Engineers Institute in Dhaka, he said the BNP prefers to enjoy absolute power rather than pursue reform.

Hossain stated that although the BNP repeatedly mentioned a 'note of dissent', the consensus commission had agreed that any differing opinions would be recorded separately, making dissent secondary. He added that after the referendum, BNP’s approval or disapproval was no longer a central issue. He questioned BNP’s objections to four specific referendum questions, which included proposals for a new upper house, a caretaker government under a new formula, and neutral boards for constitutional appointments.

He urged BNP not to disregard the people’s verdict from the referendum and emphasized that the proposed constitutional reforms aimed to strengthen the basic structure of governance. The session was moderated by Monira Sharmin, convener of the National Women’s Power.

A drug dealer named Shawkat Hossain was arrested with 300 yaba tablets in Mirzapur upazila of Tangail on Saturday night, May 2, 2026. The arrest took place around 9:30 p.m. near the flyover area of Gorai Union. Shawkat Hossain, aged 48, is the son of Hossain Uddin from Chanpur village in Latifpur Union.

According to the Detective Branch (DB) police, the operation was conducted based on secret information under the leadership of Sub-Inspector Raiz Uddin of Tangail South DB Police. Shawkat was caught red-handed while selling yaba tablets in a building on the north side of the Gorai flyover. During the search, officers recovered 300 yaba tablets from his possession.

Sub-Inspector Rashed Fazal of Mirzapur Police Station stated that a case has been filed under the Narcotics Control Act, and Shawkat Hossain has been sent to jail through the Tangail court.

Allegations of irregularities and mismanagement have surfaced in a Tk 133-crore project of the Water Development Board (Paubo) at Shrimai Canal in Patiya, Chattogram. The project, ongoing for three years, is facing structural issues as concrete blocks placed along the canal embankment have started to shift, causing partial collapses. With only two months left in the project’s timeline, none of its five packages have progressed beyond 70 percent completion, raising concerns about timely completion and effectiveness before the upcoming monsoon season.

The project, launched on January 1, 2023, under Chattogram Paur Division-1, includes riverbank protection, construction of a hydraulic elevator dam, and afforestation. Local residents allege that blocks meant to prevent erosion were not installed in vulnerable areas, while unnecessary sections received attention. They also accuse the Water Development Board and contractors of negligence in land acquisition and quality control, leading to block displacement in several sections.

Officials have denied negligence, stating that the project is still ongoing and defects will be corrected. They also reported informing local authorities about unregulated sand extraction near the dam site.

India’s Election Commission (ECI) has ordered a complete re-vote in all polling booths of the Falta Assembly constituency in West Bengal. The decision, announced on May 3, 2026, follows allegations of serious electoral offences and disruption of the democratic process during the April 29 voting. According to the ECI directive, fresh polling will be held on May 21 across 285 booths, including auxiliary ones, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., with results to be declared on May 24. Heavy and prolonged rainfall across Bangladesh has submerged vast areas of ripe Boro paddy fields, leaving farmers in distress over crop losses and loan repayments. In several districts including Sunamganj, Habiganj, Netrakona, Mymensingh, Jamalpur, and others, floodwaters have inundated low-lying lands and haor regions, damaging both ripe and half-ripe crops. Many farmers, who cultivated Boro paddy with borrowed money, are now forced to harvest immature crops to minimize losses. District administrations have formed emergency monitoring cells to address the disaster, while local agricultural offices are preparing lists of affected farmers.

In Sunamganj alone, about 20,000 hectares of farmland have been damaged, with 2,000 hectares completely destroyed, affecting over 20,000 farmers. Similar devastation has been reported from Habiganj, Naogaon, Mymensingh, and Jamalpur, where continuous rain and flash floods have caused widespread crop submersion. Farmers are struggling to dry harvested paddy due to lack of sunlight, and many have lost hope as floodwaters continue to rise.

Officials have begun assessing the extent of damage, but persistent rain and waterlogging continue to threaten remaining crops and delay recovery efforts.

A newly built bridge on the Majhigacha–Nindapur Ronger Bazar connecting road in Kachua, Chandpur, has started collapsing before its official inauguration. The approach to the 12-meter RCC girder bridge, built under the ‘Program for Supporting Rural Bridges’ project funded by the Bangladesh government and the World Bank, has partially caved in. The project, costing about 23.17 million taka, was implemented by contractor firm Messrs Harun & Sons. Field inspection revealed soil erosion under the guardwalls and large cracks and holes on the connecting road.

Local residents, including Abul Kalam Shikdar, Hazrat Ali, and Jilani, accused the contractor of using substandard materials and ignoring proper construction schedules. They claimed to have repeatedly complained to the Upazila Engineer and Assistant Engineer without any response. Residents demanded intervention from higher authorities of the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED).

Upazila Engineer Abdul Alim Liton stated that parts of the structure were damaged by rain and that the issue is under investigation. He added that the contractor has not yet received full payment, and the final bill will be settled after quality verification.

The Tk 232 crore Muhuri Irrigation Project, completed in June 2024 across Feni and Chattogram’s Mirsarai areas, has failed to deliver expected benefits to local farmers. The project, approved in 2014 under the government’s Irrigation Management Improvement Project with Asian Development Bank support, aimed to irrigate 18,000 hectares through 850 underground pipeline schemes. However, only 338 schemes are operational, and just 3,000 hectares have received irrigation so far.

Flooding in 2024 severely damaged pumps, pipelines, prepaid meters, and electrical systems, halting irrigation despite formal handover to farmers. The project also faced disruptions from local extortion groups, theft of equipment, and corruption allegations, including claims of inflated costs and substandard materials. Farmers’ declining interest in irrigation-based crops and theft of electrical components have further hindered operations.

Project Director Md. Rafius Sajjad stated that a group has been deliberately obstructing the project, while flood damage and transformer theft have worsened the situation. Authorities continue to face challenges in restoring full functionality and ensuring the intended agricultural benefits.
