Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) helped create more than 430 job opportunities for students at 31 Chinese companies through the Sino-Bangla Day 2026: Chinese Enterprise Job Fair. DUCSU Vice President Sadiq Kayem said the plan followed a recent DUCSU delegation visit to China and subsequent contact with the Chinese Embassy. During the event, the Confucius Institute and Huawei Technologies Limited signed a memorandum of understanding, while the Huawei AI Training Program was formally launched, offering year-round free AI training for students.

Britain is helping Ukraine expand its domestic weapons production capacity as the country fights Russia, aiming to make Kyiv more self-reliant. Police and local accounts cited drug use and extortion as the alleged motives behind the killing of former Rangpur Zilla School teacher Ganapati Chakraborty Jewel and three family members in Machhuapara, Rangpur city. Ganapati, 65, his wife Pritilata, 50, daughter Prarthi, 25, and son Ayush Priyam, 12, were killed on Saturday night. Their bodies were sent to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examinations.

Global ocean surface temperatures reached a record high on Saturday, with the average sea surface temperature rising to 21.1 degrees Celsius, according to the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service. A special judge’s court in Chuadanga sentenced Raham Ali, 60, to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife, Aleya Khatun, 40. The verdict was announced on Tuesday afternoon by the Chuadanga Special Judge Court, also designated as the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal.

According to court sources, Aleya Khatun was killed by having her throat cut in Gopinathpur village of Chuadanga Sadar upazila. A murder case was filed against her husband, Raham Ali, following the incident.

After a lengthy trial, the court found Raham Ali guilty. It ordered him to remain imprisoned until his natural death and imposed a fine of Tk10,000. If he fails to pay the fine, he will serve an additional three months of rigorous imprisonment.

US-Bangla Airlines will resume operations on the Dhaka-Jashore route from September 9, 2026, citing long-standing demand from residents of the greater Jashore region and the need for easier, time-saving air travel. The private carrier will operate six flights a week, with two daily services on Saturdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, using 72-seat ATR 72-600 aircraft.

The first flight will leave Dhaka at 9:30am and arrive in Jashore at 10:15am, returning at 10:45am and landing in Dhaka at 11:30am. The second service will depart Dhaka at 4:45pm, reach Jashore at 5:30pm, then leave Jashore at 6:00pm for a 6:45pm arrival at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

The lowest one-way fare has been set at Tk5,749, while the return fare is Tk11,498, including applicable taxes and surcharges. US-Bangla said the decision considered regional needs for business, medical care, education, tourism and faster connections, and added that flight frequency may be increased depending on passenger demand and market conditions.

Sonam Wangchuk, a prominent face of India’s widely discussed ‘Cockroach’ youth movement, has called for reforms to the country’s political system and the selection of honest, capable leaders. The 60-year-old engineer, environmental activist and educator said public trust in elections, examinations and government officials has declined. He began a hunger strike supporting the movement on June 28 and ended it on July 24 after 26 days, during which he lost about 11 kilograms and his health became critical.

Bangladesh’s Home Ministry has reassigned 17 senior police officers to new responsibilities, affecting key positions in the Rapid Action Battalion, Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Police Bureau of Investigation, Criminal Investigation Department, Special Branch, Armed Police Battalion and Rangpur Metropolitan Police. The changes were made through three separate notifications signed on Tuesday by Deputy Secretary Tawsif Ahmed.

PBI DIG Md Humayun Kabir was transferred as additional director general of RAB, while Railway Police Additional DIG Md Tofayel Ahmed Mia was appointed joint police commissioner of DMP. SB DIG Md Mahbubur Rashid was named commissioner of Rangpur Metropolitan Police. Several officers were also attached to APBN and the Specialized Training Centre in Khagrachhari.

The notifications also cancelled two earlier transfer orders: one involving DMP Joint Police Commissioner Mohammad Kamruzzaman’s move to Police Headquarters and another involving DMP Deputy Commissioner Mallik Ahsan Uddin Sami’s proposed posting as Narail police superintendent. Prime Minister’s Political Adviser Zahir Uddin Swapan said the elected government is working relentlessly to overcome a fragile economy inherited amid problems in the power and energy sectors. Bangladesh’s Financial Institutions Division has directed Sonali Bank PLC to prioritize actual cash recovery of defaulted loans rather than relying on reclassification or accounting adjustments. The instruction was raised at a recent meeting between Financial Institutions Division Secretary Nazma Mobarek and the bank’s board, which reviewed its financial and operational condition, progress, risks, opportunities and policy needs.

Although Sonali Bank’s default-loan ratio has fallen to 16.4 percent, the division considers the level still high by the standards of a sound and efficient commercial bank. It called for strict oversight, stronger governance and safeguards to ensure Bangladesh Bank’s special exit facility supports genuine settlement and cash collection, rather than extending loans. The board was also asked for information on classified loans eligible for the facility, applications received and cases resolved.

The government urged greater financing for cottage, micro, small and medium enterprises, agriculture, women and new entrepreneurs, while stressing borrower assessment, cash flow, business viability and ownership checks before lending. Priorities for the next 12 to 24 months include improving recoveries, expanding quality lending and digital banking, strengthening risk management, and improving customer services and financial-inclusion programmes.
