Cuba’s central bank announced that starting June 6, Visa and Mastercard transactions will no longer be processed in the country. The move follows new US trade sanctions imposed by the Trump administration, which have intensified economic pressure on Cuba’s already struggling economy. According to Reuters, several foreign companies have begun limiting or ending business ties with Cuba after a US executive order issued on May 1.
The central bank stated that due to these restrictions, payments for goods and services through international cards can no longer be received. Analysts described the development as a major blow to Cuba’s economy, particularly its tourism sector, which was already in distress. The sanctions also target GAESA, a military-controlled business group accused of secretly managing revenues from tourism, financial transactions, and remittances.
Cuba’s government has denied the allegations, asserting that GAESA contributes to the country’s economic and social development. In recent weeks, several foreign hotels, airlines, and shipping companies have reportedly begun withdrawing from Cuba amid the tightening sanctions.

The U.S. Department of Defense is facing growing financial pressure as fuel prices surge due to the ongoing Iran war. According to Pentagon data, the average refined fuel price for the military rose from 154.14 dollars per barrel in October to 195.72 dollars in April. The increase could lead to more than one billion dollars in unexpected additional costs this year, as the department consumes about 80 million barrels of fuel annually.
Military leaders are also struggling with rising civilian fuel and commercial flight costs. Since troops often rely on commercial flights, rental cars, and private vehicles for training and other activities, the higher fuel prices are placing extra strain on the defense budget.
As a result, travel expenses have come under strict review. Reports indicate that since at least April, some units have significantly reduced or canceled travel for training and other events to control spending.

Modest fashion, emphasizing elegance and cultural identity within Islamic principles, is gaining global popularity among Muslim women. The trend was recently showcased at the first Paris Modest Fashion Week, held from April 16 to 18 at the historic Hotel Le Marois, where around 30 brands from various countries presented collections featuring embroidered satin suits, flowing gowns, and reimagined traditional Muslim attire. The event carried both commercial and cultural significance in France, a country long engaged in debates over secularism and religious symbols.
Organizer Think Fashion, which has hosted international modest fashion weeks for over a decade, stated that the sector is now a vital part of the global fashion industry. According to the “State of the Global Islamic Economy” report by DinarStandard, Muslim consumer spending on clothing could reach about 3 billion dollars by 2028. The growth is driven by a rising Muslim population, social media influence, and a new generation of educated young women expressing identity through modern fashion.
Major brands such as DKNY, Tommy Hilfiger, and H&M have launched special collections targeting this market, while Middle Eastern designers like Isra Allaf are redefining traditional garments such as the abaya through innovative design and cultural fusion.

The Karatulab Khan Mosque, located in Begumbazar of Old Dhaka, stands as a significant example of Mughal-era architecture in Bengal. Built between 1701 and 1704 by Murshid Quli Khan, who was appointed as the Diwan of Bengal by Emperor Aurangzeb in 1700, the mosque is notable for its five domes, octagonal corner towers, and a rare 'baoli' or stepwell. The structure, made of brick, sand, and lime, combines religious function with architectural artistry.
Researchers note that Murshid Quli Khan’s long service in the Deccan region before arriving in Bengal influenced the mosque’s design, particularly the inclusion of the baoli, which is uncommon in Bengal’s mosque architecture. The mosque’s balanced proportions, decorative arches, and restrained ornamentation emphasize structural beauty over lavish embellishment.
More than three centuries old, the Karatulab Khan Mosque remains a valuable monument of Dhaka’s history and Mughal heritage. Its unique architectural blend and historical significance make it an enduring symbol of the city’s cultural and artistic legacy.

Algeria delivered a major statement ahead of the upcoming World Cup by defeating the Netherlands 1-0 in their final preparation match. The game, held just before the tournament, saw winger Anis Haj Moussa score the decisive goal in the 86th minute after a solo effort from the right flank. It was the 24-year-old’s first international goal, achieved against players from his club’s home country, as he represents Dutch side Feyenoord.
Goalkeeper Luca Zidane, son of football legend Zinedine Zidane, was instrumental in the victory, producing a flawless performance by saving all five shots on target from the Dutch. Wearing a protective mask due to a recent facial injury, his display may have settled Algeria’s debate over their first-choice goalkeeper. The Netherlands dominated the first half, but Algeria turned the tide after the break, inspired by their supporters.
Algeria will open their World Cup campaign against defending champions Argentina, with Austria and Jordan also in their group. The Netherlands, meanwhile, will play Uzbekistan in another friendly before the tournament.
