Prices of most essential commodities in Dhaka’s major markets have continued to rise, increasing the cost of living for ordinary citizens. Despite the overall upward trend, the price of boiled rice has fallen by 5 to 7 taka per kilogram over the past week. Traders at Karwan Bazar, Nayabazar, and Segunbagicha reported that new rice arrivals have reduced prices of Miniket and medium-quality rice, while premium polao rice remains expensive.
Other daily necessities such as flour, edible oil, sugar, pulses, and chicken have become costlier. Eggs are now selling for 135 to 145 taka per dozen in wholesale markets and up to 160 taka in neighborhood shops. Vegetable prices have slightly eased but remain high, with most items selling above 70 taka per kilogram. Cooking gas prices have also increased by more than 600 taka in two phases, adding to household expenses.
Consumer Association of Bangladesh Vice President S.M. Nazer expressed concern over the abnormal price hikes and criticized the lack of market monitoring, urging stronger government oversight to protect low-income consumers.

The 2026 Secondary School Certificate (SSC), Dakhil, and equivalent examinations in Bangladesh have been marred by repeated incidents of wrong question paper distribution since the exams began on April 21. Multiple centers under various education boards mistakenly handed out incorrect subjects or set codes, disrupting exams and causing distress among students and parents. The latest reported case occurred on May 10 in Dinajpur, where a physics test was conducted using the wrong set code.
Education board officials attributed the errors to negligence by teachers responsible for distributing papers, particularly confusion between regular and irregular candidates’ question sets. Several teachers and center secretaries have been relieved of duties or warned, while authorities assured that affected students would not suffer academically. The Inter-Education Board Coordination Committee and the Madrasa Education Board confirmed disciplinary measures and additional monitoring.
The exams also faced challenges from adverse weather, power outages, and rumors of question leaks, which the Education Ministry later dismissed as false. Despite these disruptions, officials stated that results would be evaluated fairly and that corrective steps were underway to prevent recurrence.

Intern doctors at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura began a work stoppage on Wednesday night following a clash with relatives of a deceased child patient. The incident occurred after the death of a child named Nihan, whose family accused doctors of negligence. Despite his assurances, the intern doctors announced a strike and suspended emergency services.
On Thursday, the interns held a human chain protest in front of the hospital’s emergency and casualty departments. They presented four demands: ensuring doctors’ safety, installing CCTV surveillance in all wards, conducting a fair investigation and punishing those responsible, and guaranteeing administrative support for a safe working environment. The hospital authorities have formed a three-member committee to investigate the incident.
The protesting interns warned of a larger movement if their safety concerns and the Health Service and Protection Act 2024 are not effectively implemented.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh has placed the private European University of Bangladesh on its red list. The decision was formalized in a letter signed by Dr. Md. Sultan Mahmud Bhuiyan, Director of Private University Management at the UGC, and the directive was published on Thursday. According to the UGC website, the university appears at serial number 52 among private universities, now marked with three red stars.
The UGC cited several reasons for the red listing, including ongoing ownership disputes and legal cases involving the university’s Board of Trustees, admission of students beyond the approved capacity, and operation of academic activities on a campus built on less land than required under the Private University Act, 2010, even after twelve years. The commission also noted that the university had not complied with directives from the Ministry of Education and the UGC.
Among 116 private universities in Bangladesh, three others are similarly marked with three red stars on the UGC website. The commission stated that such markings are intended to alert students to exercise caution when seeking admission.
