Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal has congratulated students who passed the Secondary School Certificate, or SSC, and equivalent examinations. In a press release issued on August 10, the student organization also expressed sympathy for those who did not achieve their desired results. It said the average pass rate in this year's SSC and equivalent examinations was 62.25 percent.

The organization offered heartfelt greetings and sincere congratulations to all successful candidates. It described young people as the country's future and said it expects the next generation to gain genuine education and devote themselves to the welfare of the country and nation. The statement also urged young people to become politically aware rather than politically disengaged.

The release said young people should help collectively resist any domestic or hegemonic conspiracy against democracy, independence and sovereignty. It expressed hope that their talent, qualifications and patriotism would help establish Bangladesh in a dignified position before the world. The organization also pledged to stand beside the new generation in building a beautiful, safe, democratic and discrimination-free future. The message was issued by office secretary Md Jahangir Alam.

Shyamal Chandra Haldar, acting head teacher of Middle Sonakur Government Primary School No. 14 in Kaukhali upazila of Pirojpur, has been temporarily suspended. The action followed allegations that he violated government instructions by having students plant tree branches instead of saplings during a tree-planting programme. A signed order from the district primary education officer confirmed the suspension.

Under a special programme of the prime minister, schools had been clearly instructed to plant fruit, forest and medicinal saplings on their grounds on July 15. According to the allegation, Haldar arranged for students to plant branches in place of saplings and uploaded photographs of the activity to a teachers’ social media group.

Following a written complaint, Kaukhali assistant upazila primary education officer Rafiqul Islam conducted an on-site investigation on July 19 and found the allegation to be true. Authorities temporarily suspended Haldar under the Government Servants (Discipline and Appeal) Rules. Upazila primary education officer Wahidul Islam said action was taken after the allegation was proven. He also said a female teacher’s complaint against an assistant teacher would be investigated under the rules.

India’s High Commissioner to Dhaka, Dinesh Trivedi, said India’s people and Prime Minister Narendra Modi want good relations with Bangladesh. Speaking to reporters after meeting Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed at the Secretariat on Monday afternoon, Trivedi said he hoped positive developments would come in the future.

Trivedi said Bangladesh and India have democratic issues, and that such issues will remain, describing this as part of democracy’s beauty. He said relations between the two countries would be resolved through dialogue despite those issues. He also said he was pleased to meet the prime minister and the home minister.

A Dhaka court has granted three days’ remand for questioning of former Gazipur-5 member of parliament Akhtaruzzaman, who was arrested in a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act filed by Tejgaon Industrial Area police. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam issued the order on Monday afternoon, August 10. Prosecution department Sub-Inspector Arif Reza confirmed the matter.

Last Thursday, the investigating officer, Tejgaon zonal team Inspector Md Masudur Rahman, produced Akhtaruzzaman before the court and sought seven days’ remand. As the hearing was not held that day, he was sent to jail and Monday was set for the remand hearing. He was brought to court under police guard on Monday afternoon.

The remand petition said preliminary questioning had produced evidence of the accused’s involvement in the incident. It cited the need to identify and arrest absconding associates, gather information on their alleged anti-state illegal plans, and determine the source of illegal cocktail bombs in custody. Akhtaruzzaman’s lawyers sought cancellation of remand and bail, while state lawyer Omar Faruk Faruqui argued in favour of remand.

The High Court granted eight weeks’ anticipatory bail to Gazi Nazrul Islam, the expelled Jamaat-e-Islami member of parliament for Satkhira-4, in an attempted murder case filed at Pallabi police station in the capital. A bench of Justice K M Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher issued the order on Monday after hearing the matter.

The National Citizen Party (NCP) has alleged that a conspiracy is under way to hand Bangladesh’s energy sector to identified mafia business groups, putting the state and public hostage. Dhaka University’s Central Mosque has activated an air-conditioning system after a long wait and student demands, according to a report published on August 10, 2026. The Dhaka University Central Students’ Union, or DUCSU, and the university administration installed 21 air conditioners, each with a capacity of five tonnes. The system is intended to allow worshippers to pray more comfortably during intense heat.

A visit to the mosque found the newly installed units operating and worshippers praying in greater comfort. Although air conditioning had long been sought for the mosque, electricity-connection and other complications had prevented its activation. DUCSU repeatedly contacted relevant offices, and the system began operating after the required electricity connection was provided. Former vice-chancellor Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan said the activation completed an important mosque renovation and redecoration initiative.

Khan said a DUCSU delegation sought support for renovation funding from then energy adviser Dr Fawzul Kabir Khan in the second half of 2025. A corporate institution that requested anonymity later agreed to assist. DUCSU career development secretary Mazharul Islam said obtaining the electricity line required prolonged efforts involving university and power offices.

A record 230 migrants reached the United Kingdom in a single small boat after crossing the English Channel, local media reported Monday. According to the BBC, the vessel arrived in the UK on Saturday. The crossing set a new record for the number of people travelling in one boat.

The previous record was 165 people in a single boat, set in July. The UK Home Office said a total of 258 migrants arrived after crossing the English Channel in four boats on Saturday, meaning the record vessel accounted for most of the day’s arrivals.

A Home Office spokesperson told the BBC that the incident highlighted the “reckless and dangerous tactics” of criminal people-smuggling gangs. The spokesperson said the gangs were putting lives at risk by placing more people than vessels could carry in unsuitable boats. Despite the record number aboard one boat, overall small-boat crossings have fallen this year. Preliminary Home Office data cited by the BBC showed about 14,820 people had reached the UK by small boat so far, 43 percent below the same period last year and 16 percent below the equivalent period in 2024.

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami chief and parliamentary opposition leader Dr Shafiqur Rahman demanded justice for the killings of Shibir leaders Saifullah Bari and Mohammad Salauddin at a public rally in Bonarpara, Saghatta, Gaibandha. Speaking Monday at 10am at Bonarpara Kazi Azhar Ali Government Model High School field, he said no one had survived by ignoring the public verdict and called for it to be respected.

Rahman said the current government and opposition parties had been oppressed for the past 15 years and should not become oppressors themselves. He said five of their members had been killed after the government was formed. He urged people not to move toward another era of killings, saying Bangladeshis, especially young people, do not fear intimidation and do not want fascism.

He described deprivation of the greater Rangpur region as an act against the people. He called extortion, land grabbing and killing social filth that must be removed, and said the administration is not any party’s force but a national asset that must work for everyone. Bangladesh expressed hope that India would accelerate the extradition process for Sheikh Hasina during a courtesy meeting between Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi. The meeting was held on Monday at the prime minister’s office in the Cabinet Division at the Bangladesh Secretariat. The two sides discussed important bilateral issues concerning Bangladesh and India.

Students in India’s Jharkhand state staged a sustained protest over alleged irregularities in government job recruitment examinations, marching toward the state assembly on Monday morning. Protesters broke through barricades on the road in Ranchi as they moved toward the assembly. Police later used water cannons to disperse them, but the demonstrators did not back down.

Three rounds of talks between students and the government side failed. The protesters demanded that the Central Bureau of Investigation be given responsibility for investigating the alleged exam irregularities and that the examination system be reformed. Protesters then called for a peaceful march from the old assembly to the new assembly, urging students and parents from all districts of Jharkhand to join.

Residents, teachers and school committee members in Mongla, Bagerhat, have alleged that soil was dug at night to build a drainage channel across playgrounds beside Bururburia Government Primary School and Bururburia Secondary School in Sundarban Union. Police in Dinajpur arrested Mujibur Rahman Mujib, general secretary of the district Krishak Dal, over allegations that he physically assaulted CID officer Md Nawabur Rahman at Kotwali police station. He was arrested around 11 pm on Sunday night, according to the report. Mujib is the son of Sheikh Ismail of the Balubadanga area in Dinajpur municipality.

A case was filed at Kotwali police station by Nawabur Rahman on Sunday night, naming two unidentified people as accused. The complaint says the CID officer went to the station to collect documents for an investigation. After collecting them, a person asked about the officer-in-charge's whereabouts. Nawabur identified himself as police personnel and said he did not know where the OC was.

The complaint alleges that the person used abusive language and that Mujib later slapped the CID officer on the cheek. Police personnel present tried to restrain the accused. The complaint also alleges threats and abusive, defamatory remarks after witnesses identified the victim as a CID officer. Kotwali police station OC Mohammad Nur Nabi said Mujib had been sent to court.

Islami Bank Bangladesh PLC has filed a formal complaint with the Anti-Corruption Commission against 38 people, including former president Md Shahabuddin Chuppu and businessman S Alam, over allegations of embezzling Tk500 crore through loans. The complaint was submitted at the ACC office on Monday afternoon.

According to the complaint, after S Alam Group took control of the bank in 2017, the loan limit of Suprov Composite Knit Limited, described as a weak company, was fraudulently raised from Tk100 crore to Tk500 crore. The money was subsequently withdrawn and allegedly embezzled.

The complaint said S Alam played a role in securing the allegedly illegal loan allocation for Suprov Composite Knit Limited, an associate company of Anontex Group’s Yunus Badal. It also alleged that Md Shahabuddin, as a then board member, and former managing directors Monirul Moula, Abdul Hamid Miah and Mahbub Ul Alam approved the arrangement and benefited financially. Bank authorities said irregularities were identified through investigations by four audit firms.
