Hungary’s long-serving nationalist leader Viktor Orbán has conceded defeat after 16 years in power, following a decisive victory by Péter Magyar and his Tisza Party in Sunday’s general election. Official results released early Monday showed Tisza securing 53.6 percent of the vote and 138 of 199 parliamentary seats, while Orbán’s Fidesz party won 37.8 percent and 55 seats. The far-right Our Homeland party gained six seats. Péter Magyar celebrated the outcome in Budapest, declaring that Hungarians had overthrown an authoritarian system and rewritten history.

Magyar pledged to unite the nation and emphasized that voter turnout reached a record 79.5 percent, the highest in Hungary’s democratic history. His campaign focused on distancing Hungary from Russia and strengthening ties with the European Union and Ukraine, contrasting sharply with Orbán’s close relationships with Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. Analysts described the election as the most significant since the end of the communist era.

Orbán’s popularity had waned amid economic stagnation, corruption allegations, and international isolation. Magyar, once a loyal Fidesz member, broke with the party in 2024 after a scandal and later joined Tisza, leading it to this historic victory.

On April 14, 2026, while Bangladesh celebrated Pahela Baishakh with colorful festivities, the char regions of Kurigram remained untouched by the joy. In areas such as Rajibpur, Roumari, Chilmari, and Ulipur, residents continued their daily struggles, unaware or unable to participate in the traditional celebrations. For many, extreme poverty and the constant battle against nature have made the festival a distant luxury.

Locals described how most families live hand to mouth, unable to afford new clothes, festive meals, or visits to fairs. Frequent floods and river erosion have left nearly 400 chars deprived of basic needs, while poor communication infrastructure prevents participation in city events. Despite their hardships, residents still settle debts through traditional hal khata practices to maintain credit with local lenders.

Teachers and cultural activists in Kurigram expressed concern over the exclusion of char communities from national celebrations. They urged government and administrative initiatives to ensure that all citizens, regardless of location or wealth, can share in the cultural spirit of Pahela Baishakh.

Seven workers were killed and six others injured when a truck overturned on the Dhaka–Chattogram Highway in Hasanpur area of Daudkandi upazila, Cumilla, early Monday, April 13. The truck, carrying goods and 13 laborers from Dinajpur to Cumilla and Feni, lost control and flipped over around 3 a.m., throwing the workers off and crushing several beneath it. The victims had been traveling in search of work.

Injured passengers alleged that the truck’s helper was driving at the time of the accident after the main driver handed him the steering wheel near the Meghna Bridge toll plaza. Highway police confirmed that the truck veered off the road and fell into a ditch. The bodies of the deceased were recovered and sent to the police station, while the injured were taken to the local health complex for treatment.

Police suspect excessive speed caused the crash but said a full investigation is underway to determine the exact reason.

Members of the Chattogram–Cox’s Bazar Highway Development Movement and local residents blocked the Chattogram–Cox’s Bazar highway for one and a half hours on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, demanding its expansion into six lanes. The demonstration took place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in front of the traffic police box at Bottoli Motor Station in Lohagara upazila, Chattogram. Protesters said the narrow and risky highway causes frequent accidents and loss of lives, and they warned of tougher programs if no action is taken soon.

Following the blockade, representatives of Shahjahan Chowdhury, Member of Parliament for Chattogram-15 (Satkania–Lohagara), assured that all necessary steps would be taken within seven days to upgrade the highway to six lanes. Based on this assurance, the protesters withdrew their blockade. Local administrative officials, including the upazila executive officer, the officer-in-charge of Lohagara Police Station, and the traffic in-charge, were present during the event.

The protest reflects growing frustration over long-standing promises to widen the highway, which remains a major safety concern for commuters and residents.

US Vice President JD Vance stated that the decision on a ceasefire agreement now depends entirely on Iran, saying the 'ball is in their court.' He explained that the United States has clarified its position and conditions in the negotiations and has already presented a proposal. The main question, he said, is whether Tehran will accept it.

Vance emphasized that Washington will not compromise on two issues: strict control over Iran’s enriched uranium and an effective verification system to prevent nuclear weapons development. He added that if Iran abandons its nuclear weapons program, the United States is ready to treat it as a normal country. The US also expects the Strait of Hormuz to be fully reopened as part of the ceasefire, as its closure has significantly disrupted global energy supplies.

A recent meeting in Pakistan ended without a final resolution, though both sides indicated willingness to continue discussions, according to the report sourced from Al Jazeera.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman inaugurated the 'Krishok Card' program in Tangail on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, coinciding with Pahela Baishakh. The launch took place at Shaheed Maruf Stadium in Tangail Sadar upazila, where the Prime Minister handed over the cards to farmers, marking the official start of the initiative. The event was attended by his adviser and BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi. During the visit, the Prime Minister was also scheduled to pay respects at the mausoleum of Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani.

The 'Krishok Card' is one of the major election pledges of the BNP government, following earlier implementations of the Family Card, Sports Card, and canal excavation programs. Agriculture Minister Aminur Rashid stated that the pre-piloting phase will begin in 11 agricultural blocks across the country, benefiting 20,671 landless, marginal, and small farmers. Each cardholder will receive an annual cash benefit of 2,500 taka.

The initiative aims to strengthen rural livelihoods and ensure financial support for small-scale farmers, aligning with the government’s broader agricultural development agenda.

Iran has proposed suspending its uranium enrichment program for five years, but the United States has rejected the offer, insisting on a twenty-year freeze. The proposal was made during a meeting held in Islamabad, Pakistan, according to senior Iranian and US officials cited by The New York Times.

The report said that both sides exchanged proposals on halting Tehran’s nuclear activities but remained far apart on key terms. Despite the disagreements, officials indicated that the talks might open a path toward a potential peace agreement. Meanwhile, the United States has begun imposing blockades on Iranian ports, escalating tensions between the two nations.

Iran’s nuclear program continues to be one of the central issues in the ongoing conflict. US President Donald Trump reiterated on Sunday that Washington would ensure Iran never acquires nuclear weapons, underscoring the deep divide over the future of Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

A Chinese-owned oil tanker named 'Rich Starry' crossed the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday, defying a newly imposed US naval blockade. The vessel, operated by a company already under US sanctions, carried about 250,000 barrels of methanol from the UAE’s Hamriyah port. According to shipping data, the tanker had previously been blacklisted in 2023 for allegedly helping Iran evade fuel sanctions and was formerly known as 'Full Star'.

The blockade, announced by President Donald Trump and effective since Monday, aims to halt Iran’s oil exports. The tanker’s passage marked its second attempt within 24 hours, after initially turning back near Iran’s Qeshm Island. Analysts described the move as a test of the US blockade’s enforcement capacity. Another tanker, 'LPC', was also reported entering the Gulf of Oman after docking at an Iranian port.

The incident has heightened concern among Asian nations reliant on Middle Eastern oil. In response to the rising tension, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called for diplomatic dialogue between Tehran and Washington to resolve the situation.

US Vice President JD Vance has accused Iran of engaging in 'economic terrorism' by blocking navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. In an interview with Fox News host Bret Baier, Vance said President Donald Trump had shown that both sides could play this game, referring to the strategic waterway. He warned that if Iran pursued economic terrorism, the United States would respond by preventing any Iranian ships from leaving port.

Vance also revealed that recent talks between the United States and Iran in Islamabad, Pakistan, had made significant progress. He stated that the next move was up to Iran, urging Tehran to show flexibility and accept what he described as key US demands. These include US oversight of Iran’s enriched uranium and the establishment of a verification system to ensure Iran cannot produce nuclear weapons.

The report cited BBC Bangla as its source and noted that China criticized US sanctions as irresponsible, while Pakistan expressed readiness to host further discussions if needed.

US Energy Secretary Chris Wright has indicated that global oil prices could reach their highest levels in the coming weeks due to ongoing disruptions in shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Speaking at the ‘Semaphore World Economy’ conference in Washington, D.C., Wright said fuel prices will remain high until meaningful maritime traffic resumes through the key waterway, adding that prices could rise even further before stabilizing.

Wright explained that oil prices may begin to decline once the United States-Iran conflict ends and energy supplies return to normal. However, he cautioned that this process will take time and may not occur until around September. His remarks highlight the sensitivity of global energy markets to geopolitical tensions and supply chain interruptions in critical maritime routes.

The statement underscores the potential for short-term volatility in global fuel markets as disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz continue to constrain supply routes vital to international trade.

In Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat, consumers have expressed anger over pharmacies selling medicines strictly at the maximum retail price (MRP) without offering the usual 5–10 percent discount seen elsewhere in the country. A field visit on April 13 revealed that almost all essential and life-saving drugs, including insulin, were being sold at full price, putting additional financial pressure on buyers, particularly those with chronic illnesses.

Buyers alleged that while pharmacies in neighboring districts such as Rangpur and Kurigram continue to offer regular discounts, Patgram traders have stopped doing so, creating what appears to be an informal market control or syndicate. Pharmacy owners, however, claimed that rising operational costs, including rent and electricity, have made discounts unfeasible. Some businesspeople also hinted at an unofficial local decision discouraging commission or discount offers.

Consumers reported filing complaints with the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection but said no effective action had been taken. Observers stressed the need for stronger oversight to ensure transparency in the life-saving medicine market and protect ordinary consumers from financial strain.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday announced a naval blockade on Iran, declaring that American forces would intercept ships entering or leaving Iranian ports. The move followed the collapse of peace talks in Islamabad after Iran refused to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Trump warned that any Iranian vessels approaching the blockade would be destroyed, claiming that Iran’s navy had already suffered heavy losses. The U.S. Central Command confirmed the blockade’s initiation, stating it would cover all Iranian coastal areas but would not disrupt international transit through the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian leaders rejected the threat, with Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf vowing not to yield and warning of severe retaliation. The Revolutionary Guard Corps labeled the U.S. action as “piracy” and released footage showing U.S. destroyers retreating after Iranian warnings. Britain, Russia, Spain, and China criticized the blockade, calling it reckless and harmful to global stability.

Following Trump’s announcement, global oil prices rose by 7 percent to $102.29 per barrel, while U.S. crude climbed 8 percent to $104.24. Germany responded to the energy shock by announcing temporary fuel tax cuts to ease domestic pressure.
