Bangladesh Bank has dissolved the boards of four financial institutions undergoing closure and declared their managing director posts vacant. On Sunday, it appointed administrators to Aviva Finance, Far East Finance, FAS Finance and International Leasing, according to a report published on August 9, 2026. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said no one would be allowed to toy with the fate of the country’s people. He said people who believe in democracy and freedom of expression must decide what to do. Rahman urged people to pledge to resist those creating obstacles to national development and to improving citizens’ fortunes. Dhaka Residential Model College’s Arup-Bit team won the secondary-category championship at South Korea’s education ministry-organized 16th e-Icon World Contest. The final competition was held on August 7. The team included ICT department lecturer Syed Mahbub Hasan Amiri, Grade 12 student Md. Shafiul Alam Siddiqui Shreshtho, and SSC examinee Aranya Abir Khan Prapyo. The college disclosed the achievement in a press release on Sunday.

India recorded a nearly 80% increase in student suicides over a decade, rising from 8,068 cases in 2014 to 14,488 in 2024, according to the National Crime Records Bureau's Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India report. The figures emerged after nationwide protests over repeated exam cancellations and question-paper leaks, followed by the government's announcement at the end of July that the education minister would resign.

The report listed failure in examinations as the leading cause of suicide among students after family problems. Former Netanyahu aide Mitchell Barak said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s public rejection of a Gaza plan is primarily linked to the upcoming October election. The Bangladesh Police Service Association alleged that people described as covert allies of fascist forces, both inside and outside the police, are supplying false, motivated and misleading information to online activists and people it called nominal journalists at home and abroad. It alleged that fugitive and socially isolated fascist forces, along with some self-interested groups, had then engaged in a planned campaign.

According to the association, the alleged misinformation has expanded from targeting individuals to maligning senior police officers and the head of the force. It said this was severely harming the morale of officers returning to duty and obstructing the work drive and effectiveness of a disciplined force. The association condemned the alleged campaign, arguing that efforts driven by personal, group or political interests do not constitute freedom of expression.

Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis Ameer Allama Mamnul Haque said his party does not seek the government’s fall but wants to ensure that it does not become fascist. Opposition leader and Jamaat-e-Islami chief Dr Shafiqur Rahman called for justice and a merit-based state at a 36 July celebration in Eskaton, Dhaka, on Sunday afternoon. He said young students, ordinary citizens, workers and religious scholars participated. Bangladesh’s Meteorological Department said a new low-pressure area may form over the central Bay of Bengal on August 13 or the following day, potentially bringing heavy to very heavy rain across the country from August 14. FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s adviser Hicham Kharja has described recent European opposition to Infantino as fear of losing dominance. Bangladesh’s Cabinet Division has formed six committees to manage the swearing-in ceremony for the new president, according to an office order issued on Sunday. The Bangladesh Diabetic Association (BADAS) and the Diabetes in Asia Study Group (DASG) jointly held a two-day international conference in Dhaka. The event took place at the Shaheed Abu Sayed Convention Hall in the capital and brought together local and international specialist physicians, nurses and organisers. Israel has rejected a proposed 15-point plan by US President Donald Trump’s “Board of Peace” concerning the Gaza Strip, according to a report published on August 9, 2026. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israeli forces would not withdraw from Gaza until Hamas had been fully disarmed.
