State Minister for Land and Hill Tracts Affairs Mir Mohammad Helal Uddin said opposition parties do not want to implement the July Charter in practice and merely speak about it publicly. He said the government has taken effective steps to carry out the charter’s reform proposals. Helal made the remarks on Wednesday afternoon at a discussion at Chittagong University’s Faculty of Social Sciences auditorium marking July Mass Uprising Day 2026.

He said all political parties except one signed the National July Charter at the South Plaza of the National Parliament on October 17, 2025. According to Helal, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman MP announced that the charter would be fully implemented, including notes of dissent. He said a 17-member constitutional amendment committee had been formed to advance necessary reforms based on the charter’s proposals.

The committee held its first meeting on August 4 under the home minister’s chairmanship, Helal said. He added that decisions on constitutional reforms would follow discussions with all stakeholders. Seven seats on the committee are held for BNP lawmakers, five for other parliamentary parties and five allocated to Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, he said. Helal alleged Jamaat sought time and later did not submit member names.

Dhaka-12 lawmaker and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami executive council member Saiful Alam Khan Milon called for immediate constitutional reform, saying the prime minister’s plan would not bring liberation for Bangladeshis. Speaking on August 5 at the Institution of Engineers in Ramna, Dhaka, at an event titled “Droh-er July in Memory of the Martyrs,” he urged the government not to attempt to control universities through a “helmet force.”

Milon blamed Jubo Dal, Chhatra Dal and BNP for an incident in which a youth from Habiganj lost an eye. He referred to violence at Jagannath University, Alia Madrasa and Dhaka College, saying the government and Tarique Rahman could not evade responsibility. He alleged the attacks at Jagannath University and Alia Madrasa were planned and that those involved were not students there.

He also accused BNP of failing to follow its own 31-point agenda, including constitutional reform and a two-term limit for a prime minister. Milon said parliament failed from its first sitting by allowing needed rules for constitutional reform to lapse. He raised concerns about delays in the charge sheet in the Hadi murder case and called for reform, rather than amendment, of the constitution’s basic structure.

Authorities recovered materials from Gohailbari Secondary School in Ghoshpur Union of Boalmari, Faridpur, after allegations that items were being sold outside a tender process. Local residents stopped a truck carrying iron bench angles, a large iron window and other materials in the Gohailbari market area on Tuesday evening. Police and upazila administration officials later recovered the goods and returned them to the school.

According to local sources, materials from four abandoned school buildings, including tin, bricks, doors, windows and iron angles, were sold through an open tender on July 6 for Tk316,000. The allegation concerns additional iron bench angles and a large iron window, valued at about Tk30,000, which were allegedly sold separately without a tender. Union Parishad member Delwar Hossain called for a proper investigation and legal action if wrongdoing is established.

Assistant head teacher Nazrul Islam said he does not act without the head teacher's instructions, while acknowledging the sale of iron materials worth about Tk13,000 without a tender. Head teacher Ayub Ali gave no clear explanation. Committee president and assistant commissioner (land) Shibbir Ahmed said officials are investigating those involved and will take action under regulations if responsibility is found.

A 19-year-old college student, Sabbir Sheikh, died after falling into a canal while trying to flee upon seeing patrolling district detective police in Netrokona. The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon near Harikhali canal in Sadar upazila. Sabbir, son of businessman Nadim Sheikh from the town’s Mechuabazar area, was a twelfth-grade student at Abu Abbas Degree College.

Police said a nine-member DB team, led by Sub-Inspector Rajon Mia of DB West, was travelling by motorcycle on an anti-drug operation. As the team reached Harikhali canal near Amtala Road, Sabbir and several other youths reportedly tried to run away after seeing police from a distance. They jumped into the canal; others swam ashore, but Sabbir sank underwater.

Locals recovered him and DB officers took him to Netrokona 250-bed District Hospital, where a doctor declared him dead. Hospital officials said he was brought in around 4:30 pm. His sister, Purnima Akter, said he could not swim and had no cases against him or involvement in criminal activities. The family demanded an impartial investigation, while police said all aspects of the death are being examined.

A Dhaka court has sent former joint secretary Syed Jaglul Pasha to jail in a case alleging obstruction of former prime minister Khaleda Zia’s attempt to attend a rally and an attempted killing. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin issued the order on Wednesday afternoon, August 5. The court set Thursday for a hearing on a 10-day remand request filed by the investigating officer, according to prosecution department SI Moktar Hossain.

Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police arrested Pasha at about 1:30am on August 4 from a residence in the Bhatara police station area. Inspector Anwar Hossain of the DB Police Gulshan zonal team later produced him before the court and sought 10 days of remand. The application said questioning Pasha, listed as accused number 17 in the case, would help uncover the facts and arrest other fugitives.

According to the case source, on December 28, 2013, Pasha, 111 named accused and 250 to 300 unidentified people allegedly stayed outside Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan residence throughout the day with serious weapons. They are accused of assaulting BNP and affiliated organisation activists. The allegations also include placing sand-filled trucks outside the residence to block Zia from attending the rally.

A Dhaka court sent six arrested people, including NDB chairman Momen Mehdi and vice chairman Shanta Farzana, to jail in an anti-terrorism case filed at Shahbagh police station. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin issued the order on the afternoon of August 5, according to public prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruki.

The other accused sent to jail are NDB vice chairman Dr Nurjahan Nira, joint secretary general Moniruzzaman, organising secretary Aftab Mondal and Hari Sarkar. Shahbagh police sub-inspector Monirul Islam, the investigating officer, sought their detention in jail. Following a hearing, the court rejected bail petitions for four of the accused.

Bail hearings for Shanta Farzana and Momen Mehdi will take place after a decision by the Dhaka Bar Association, as both have multiple lawyers, the report said. No remand was sought, so they were not produced before the main court bench. The complaint names six people and 50 to 60 unidentified others over allegations of an attack near the Press Club on August 4 that injured several people.

Iran and Oman are close to reaching an agreement, with only one or two issues still unresolved, according to a senior Iranian diplomatic source. In comments to Qatar-based Al Jazeera on Wednesday, the source said the outstanding matters did not appear highly complicated. The report was published on August 5, 2026.

The Iranian official said an agreement could be reached by today or tomorrow if there is no harmful interference by another party. The comments indicate that the talks are in their final stage, with negotiations continuing to resolve the remaining differences between Iran and Oman.

The source said the Strait of Hormuz has not been closed because of disagreements between Iran and Oman. Any decision to close or reopen the strait would depend on a US action considered a violation of international law. The source also said Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has no current plan to visit Islamabad, although such a trip could be arranged later depending on progress in the diplomatic process.

An 11-party alliance held a rally and mass procession in Chauddagram, Cumilla, demanding implementation of the referendum verdict and the July charter, as well as justice for the killers of July. The programme took place at Chauddagram Bazar on Wednesday afternoon. Upazila Jamaat Ameer Mahfuzur Rahman chaired the rally, while Secretary Belal Hossain conducted it.

Those present included Cumilla South District Jamaat Ameer Advocate Md Shahjahan, Dhaka Metropolitan North Jamaat Majlish-e-Shura member VP Sahab Uddin, and Labour Welfare Federation central vice-president Mujibur Rahman Bhuiyan. Chauddagram upazila president of Khelafat Majlish Maulana Shahjalal also attended the event.

Other participants included former upazila Jamaat secretary Shah Mizanur Rahman, municipal Jamaat Ameer Maulana Ibrahim, NCP Jubo Shakti central vice-president Sufian Raihan, Chauddagram Upazila NCP joint coordinator Mamun Mojumdar, and Upazila Shibir president Nasim Miahji. Leaders and activists from the 11-party alliance joined the programme, where the alliance pressed its stated demands for implementation and accountability.

Maulana Mufti Abul Qasim Nomani, the rector and Sheikh al-Hadith of Darul Uloom Deoband, will deliver a religious address before Friday prayers at Bangladesh’s national mosque, Baitul Mukarram, on August 7. He will then deliver the Friday khutbah and lead the congregational prayer, according to a statement signed by Islamic Foundation public relations officer Billal Bin Kashem.

The special programme, organised by the Islamic Foundation, will cover faith and creed, piety, deeds and character, self-purification, human values, mutual harmony and social responsibility in light of the Quran and Sunnah. The statement said Nomani will also discuss following Islamic ideals in individual, family and social life.

Nomani is visiting Bangladesh from August 4 to 7 and is participating in religious programmes and exchanging views with local scholars and religious figures. The Islamic Foundation said it expects worshippers to receive guidance through his address, khutbah and leadership of prayers. It called on worshippers and members of the public to arrive at the mosque on time, while directing relevant staff, imams, muezzins and organisers to make necessary preparations.

A Dhaka court granted five days’ remand for Abdus Sobhan Kazi, vice-president of Uttara Thana Jubo League and convener of Faridpur District Matsyajibi League, in the Amin murder case linked to the July uprising. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin issued the order after a hearing on Wednesday afternoon, 5 August. The case was filed at Uttara West Police Station.

The investigating officer, Detective Branch Wari Division Inspector Mritunjoy Pandit Mithun, had sought seven days’ remand after producing Kazi before the court. The remand application said Kazi had provided information during questioning about the case incident and other fugitives. Investigators said further questioning was needed to verify his full identity and address and to identify and arrest other fugitive and unidentified accused.

According to the case record, an attack and shooting occurred during a peaceful student-public programme in the Uttara West area on 19 July 2024, amid the anti-discrimination student movement. Al Amin Khalifa was killed and others were injured. Police arrested Kazi on the night of 4 August from a flat in Swarnalata Bhaban near the Banani police station officers’ mess, seizing a Toyota Harrier, two iPhones and five Bangladeshi passports issued in his name.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain said the July Revolution of 2024 was an eruption of long-standing anger against autocracy. He made the remarks as chief guest at a discussion marking July Mass Uprising Day 2026 at the Health and Family Welfare Ministry’s conference room at the Secretariat on August 5.

The minister described the July mass revolution as a unique symbol of national achievement, alongside the Language Movement of 1952, the 1969 mass uprising, the Liberation War of 1971 and the anti-autocracy movement of 1990. He said public resentment had accumulated since 2009 because of alleged repression, enforced disappearances, killings, corruption, money laundering and political persecution under the then government. He said the nation would remember those killed or injured in the uprising with respect.

Hossain pledged to build a corruption-free Health Ministry and ensure quality healthcare for ordinary people. Health Secretary Md. Kamruzzaman Chowdhury said the July movement expressed public opposition to fascism and a desire for a representative, well-governed administration. Officials from the ministry and related directorates attended the discussion.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman checked on the health of Mitu, a fighter injured in the July mass uprising, at an event in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital on August 5, 2026. Mitu joined the programme directly from a hospital bed as the July Uprising Day event was held. The prime minister called Mitu over and spoke with the injured fighter.

Rahman asked about Mitu’s physical condition and the progress of treatment. He also expressed respect for Mitu’s courage and sacrifice during the July mass uprising. Mitu, who was injured in the July uprising of twenty-four, remains under treatment and attended the event as an invited guest despite ongoing illness.

Earlier, the prime minister formally inaugurated the July Mass Uprising Memorial Museum. He later attended a discussion meeting titled “July 36.” The meeting between the prime minister and Mitu created an emotional atmosphere among those present at the event.

Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis Ameer Allama Mamunul Haque’s new book, “Why Is July Our Struggle?”, was launched on Thursday at 3pm at the Darul Khilafah auditorium, the party’s central office. Haque chaired the unveiling event and said the book explains why his group supported July, continues to support it, and must remain on its side. He said their position in favor of July was uncompromising and allowed no room for flexibility.

The book examines Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis’s political position surrounding the July mass uprising, as well as the referendum, constitutional reform, the role of Islamists, and contemporary political realities. Haque expressed strong anger over what he described as attempts by some people to weaken the contribution and aspirations of the Qawmi ulema community in the July revolution. He also said the strongest reason his party did not form an alliance with BNP in the previous election was BNP’s position against July.

NCP spokesperson Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan said July’s history was being altered and that the July Museum had been inaugurated in a distorted form, making documentation necessary. Writer and researcher Musa Al Hafiz called the book among the leading written works by people involved in the July mass uprising. He said all sides connected to July should accept it as a textbook on the subject.

Family members of three people killed by gunfire during the July mass uprising in Bhanga, Faridpur, have expressed anger over what they describe as neglect. The families of child Abdul Ahad, Khalid Saifullah and Tamim Shikdar said no floral tributes were placed at the three martyrs’ memorials on August 5, Mass Uprising Day, and that they were not invited to government or political events.

Upazila administration officials said members of the martyr families were invited guests at an event at the deputy commissioner’s office. However, no flowers or tributes were offered at the graves of the three martyrs in Bhanga. Sources said no family member was invited to an 11 a.m. upazila administration discussion on the significance of the July mass uprising.

Abdul Ahad’s uncle, Mokhlesur Rahman, said the family received an invitation to the deputy commissioner’s event but was not contacted by the upazila administration or other organizations. He demanded justice for Ahad’s killing and a reinvestigation after police submitted a final report identifying the accused as unknown. Local BNP president Khondkar Iqbal Hossain Selim said the party’s discussion meeting was postponed due to severe weather.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman inaugurated the July Mass Uprising Memorial Museum at the former Ganabhaban in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka, on Wednesday. The opening coincided with the second anniversary of the 2024 July mass uprising. After unveiling a memorial plaque, participants recited Surah Fatiha and offered prayers, while the prime minister toured the museum’s galleries and exhibits. The museum will open to the public from Thursday.

Former interim government chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, the prime minister’s daughter Zaima Rahman and cabinet members attended. A documentary on the events of the July uprising, public participation and its victory was screened. Rahman said the museum should not become a venue for establishing the political narrative of any one party, group or individual, describing democracy-seeking people as the uprising’s protagonists.

Yunus called the museum a source of inspiration for building a new Bangladesh and urged students and citizens to visit it. According to the Cultural Affairs Ministry, the decision to convert Ganabhaban into the museum was made in September 2024. Rahman said the museum should preserve the history of all democratic movements and struggles in Bangladesh alongside the July uprising.
