Labour and Employment Minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury said the Labour Ministry will form a special investigation committee to assess conditions at tea gardens across the country. Badsha’s family was preparing to file a case, while local residents demanded exemplary punishment for those responsible.

Jagannath University barred journalists from an emergency meeting on August 15 despite formally inviting media outlets a day earlier to cover it. One man was killed and two others were seriously injured after local fishermen allegedly beat three people on suspicion of stealing fishing nets in Islampur, Jamalpur. The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon in the Ulia area near the Jamuna River. Police said they have begun investigating the case.

According to police and local sources, the three men travelled by a small boat to the Barul area of the Jamuna River. Local fishermen chased them on suspicion of net theft. The men then moved toward the Guthail area, where fishermen also followed them. When they reached Ulia, local people detained them and began beating them.

Nur Mohammad, 50, died at the scene during the mob beating. The injured men were identified as Jahangir, 40, of Batikamari in Gaibandha, and Rafiqul, 35, of Barkhal in Dewanganj. Islampur police station officer-in-charge Mizanur Rahman confirmed the incident and said legal action was being processed. It could not immediately be confirmed whether the three men were involved in stealing nets.

Mufti Ali Hasan Usama, a Jamaat-e-Islami rukun and Islamic scholar, has claimed that many scholars from the Qawmi tradition have recently joined the party. In a Facebook post cited in a report published on August 15, 2026, he said Qawmi scholars would soon outnumber Alia-stream scholars within Jamaat. Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir said Bangladesh may need about two years to build the infrastructure required for a lasting exit from its ongoing gas crisis. Speaking to journalists after a workshop in Sylhet on Saturday afternoon, he acknowledged that gas shortages are disrupting production at industrial factories and said infrastructure development was essential for a permanent solution.

Muktadir said mills and factories across the country were suffering from the gas shortage and that the situation could not be denied. He said the current government had inherited the crisis rather than created it. According to the minister, the government is working beyond conventional approaches to address the energy shortage, while seeking time to establish the necessary infrastructure.

He said the government was also working on emergency measures alongside long-term construction. On possible LNG imports from Malaysia, Muktadir said Malaysia's smaller ships were currently deployed elsewhere, limiting the ability to bring gas quickly. He said the government was nevertheless trying to determine whether temporary steps could bring some improvement to the situation.

Prime Minister Tarek Rahman will distribute current fiscal year honoraria to mosque imams, muezzins and workers serving other places of worship in Kishoreganj on Sunday. A two-day “Banglar Pishach Mela and Cultural Programme” was held on August 14 and 15 at the Swoparjito Swadhinata Square near the TSC of Dhaka University. The Revolutionary Cultural Unity, a coalition of 65 cultural organisations, arranged the event to symbolically portray aspects of exploitation, repression and authoritarianism during the previous government’s rule through art and culture. The fair opened at 10am on Friday.

Writer, researcher and columnist Dr Mahbub Hasan attended the opening as chief guest. Professor Shahidul Zahid, Nasim Ahmed, Shayla Nasim, Mrinmoy Mizan, Munshi Borhan Mahmud, Shamim Hasan and Duke Huda were among those present. Speakers said cultural expression was important for presenting incidents of exploitation, repression and political suppression from the previous government’s period to younger generations.

Organisers said the displayed figures were presented as “pishach,” or demons, through symbolic artworks. A contest asked visitors to identify the characters and submit the highest number of names through Revolutionary Cultural Unity’s Facebook page, with prizes planned for winners. The programme also included recitations, songs and other performances of indigenous culture on Saturday afternoon.

Five brick kiln owners in Lama upazila of Bandarban district were fined a total of Tk350,000 for cutting hills and endangering the environment. The penalties were imposed during inspections of brick kilns in different locations of the Raimyakhola area from Saturday afternoon to evening. Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Executive Magistrate Md Moin Uddin held a mobile court and issued the fines, according to a report published on August 15.

Sources said nearly 30 brick kilns had been established in various places in Faitong union without any permission. Their owners were allegedly cutting nearby hills and taking soil for brick production. The report identified this activity as causing environmental harm.

The mobile court fined the owners of DBM, MMB, MBI, UBM and ABC brick kilns. Md Moin Uddin said action would be taken in the future against anyone who damages the environment by establishing illegal brick kilns.

Mufti Md Amir Hamza, the member of parliament for Kushtia-3 (Sadar), described himself as the “prime minister” for Kushtia Sadar for the next five years. The remark was heard in a video circulating on social media, where he was addressing people in his electoral area, according to a report published on August 15, 2026.

In the video, Hamza said the government would provide budgets and hand them to him, asking whether the funds should be given to an angel instead. The report said it could not immediately confirm when the video was recorded or at which event he made the remarks.

Religious Affairs Minister Kazi Shah Mofazzal Hossain Kaykobad MP said he would make all-out efforts to implement a demand to declare the Qadiani community non-Muslim at the state level. The commitment appeared in a written statement for a National Ulama Mashayekh Conference organised Saturday by International Tahaffuz-e-Khatme Nabuwat Bangladesh. He could not attend in person because of illness, and the statement was read by the organisation's secretary general, Maulana Muhiuddin Rabbani.

The conference was organised around demands for a state declaration and the confiscation of all Qadiani publications. Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh chief Allama Muhibbullah Babunagari was the chief guest. The minister said he fully agreed with the belief concerning the finality of prophethood, describing it as an article of faith not only for religious scholars but for every monotheistic Muslim.

Kaykobad said he would pursue the demands raised at the conference both in his capacity at the Religious Affairs Ministry and personally. He described the current government as respectful of Islamic values and religious scholars, and said he hoped the demands would receive special consideration. In his written message, he also asked attendees to pray for his recovery.
