U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Monday lifting nearly all longstanding economic sanctions on Syria. According to the White House, the move fulfills a promise made to Syria’s interim leader Ahmed Al-Sharar and paves the way for Syria’s reintegration into the international financial system. However, sanctions related to human rights violations, drug trafficking, and chemical weapons will remain. The designation of Syria as a “state sponsor of terrorism” is still under review.
