Vandals set fire to the country’s first July Martyrs Memorial located in Hajiganj, Fatullah of Narayanganj early Monday around 3 a.m. Police officers stationed at the site quickly extinguished the fire, preventing major damage. No suspects have yet been identified or detained in connection with the incident.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Tarek Al Mehdi confirmed that authorities are reviewing CCTV footage from nearby roads and areas to identify those involved. He said it would be premature to determine whether any political group, including the Awami League, was linked to the incident before the investigation is complete. Fatullah Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mahbub explained that the fire likely started when a small burning object was thrown toward cloth decorations left from a July 16 commemorative event.

A video circulating on Facebook appeared to show a larger blaze, but police claimed it was altered using artificial intelligence technology. The memorial, inaugurated on July 14 of the previous year, honors those killed in the July–August 2024 student and public uprising.
