A sub-jail in Bakshiganj, Jamalpur, has remained unopened for 42 years after construction was completed in 1984. Built on about 2.73 acres of land, the facility was intended to serve the rural and border-adjacent area, but administrative and legal complications have prevented its inauguration. The report, published on August 3, 2026, says the government project has been left unused for decades.

The complex includes prisoner barracks, an administrative building, residential quarters for officials and staff, a playground and a large pond. It was planned to reduce the long journey and security risks involved in transporting arrested people from Bakshiganj and nearby border areas to Jamalpur District Jail. Construction-cost information was unavailable. The buildings now show wall cracks, falling plaster and damaged doors and windows, while vegetation has overgrown the site.

Residents allege that inadequate monitoring has led to encroachment and cultivation on parts of the property. Social Services Officer Mosa. Konika Khatun said the site was transferred from the Public Works Ministry to the Social Welfare Ministry in 2003. Upazila Nirbahi Officer Murad Hossain said steps are under way to turn the abandoned facility into a public-service institution.
