A senior commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced on Monday that the Strait of Hormuz is closed and warned that any vessel attempting to pass through will be attacked. Ebrahim Jabari, a senior adviser to the IRGC’s commander-in-chief, said Iranian forces would set ships ablaze if they tried to cross. The statement came as Tehran targeted energy infrastructure in retaliation for Israeli and US bombing campaigns that began on Saturday and killed Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other senior officials.
Jabari also vowed to attack oil pipelines and prevent any oil exports from the region, predicting that global oil prices would surge to $200 per barrel. The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and Oman, handles about 20 percent of the world’s oil supply, making it a critical chokepoint for global energy flows. Disruptions there have already driven up energy prices, with natural gas costs spiking nearly 50 percent in Europe and 40 percent in Asia after attacks on QatarEnergy’s LNG facilities.
The United States said it would implement measures to mitigate rising energy prices caused by the conflict, according to Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
