On July 21, 2024, six people were killed in Savar during violent clashes between police, ruling party activists, and protesters defying a curfew to join a nationwide shutdown on the Dhaka–Aricha highway. Police, led by then Additional Superintendent Abdullahil Kafi, reportedly fired repeatedly to disperse demonstrators. Armed groups affiliated with the Awami League, Jubo League, and Chhatra League joined the police in joint operations and motorcycle processions across Savar and Ashulia.

The violence followed earlier shootings on July 20 that left several dead and dozens injured. On July 21, police used tear gas and sound grenades but failed to control the crowds, who retaliated with stones. Later that day, police and ruling party activists allegedly raided and looted homes of BNP leaders, journalists, and opposition supporters, damaging property and seizing valuables. Offices of local media, including the daily Fulki, were also attacked, and several journalists were harassed.

The incidents left Savar residents in fear as clashes spread across key points of the municipality, with reports of widespread arrests and destruction continuing into the night.
