Israel’s ruling coalition, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has suffered a major setback as the ultra-Orthodox party United Torah Judaism (UTJ) pulled out. Long-standing disagreements over a draft bill exempting Yeshiva students from military service led to the rift. Six of UTJ’s seven Members of Parliament have already submitted their resignations, reducing Netanyahu’s coalition to a fragile 61 seats in the Knesset. Degel HaTorah, a faction within UTJ, accused the government of breaking its promises.
