Iran has reiterated its “sovereign rights” in the Strait of Hormuz, the Arab Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei made the remarks during a weekly news conference on August 17, 2026, saying existing laws contain the necessary provisions concerning those rights.

Baghaei said the Foreign Ministry would continue cooperating with parliament in drafting legislation related to Iran’s rights in these regional matters. He said the ministry has always considered both existing laws and changes in conditions on the ground. He also said parliament’s position is clear under the constitution.

According to Baghaei, it is the Foreign Ministry’s responsibility to cooperate with parliament as needed throughout the legislative process. The ministry has already provided expert views on a related bill and will offer further opinions if lawmakers request them. The Strait of Hormuz is described as a major energy transport route linking the Arab Gulf with the Gulf of Oman. The ministry’s statement again set out Iran’s position on its rights in the area.
