Bangladesh’s Criminal Investigation Department is re-examining old records in the murder case linked to the 1996 death of actor Salman Shah after the arrest of actor Ashraful Haque, known as Don. Don was detained at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport last Sunday while preparing to travel to Saudi Arabia. Immigration stopped him because he was barred from leaving the country in the case. A court rejected his bail request and ordered him sent to jail.

Investigators are examining what happened at Salman Shah’s Eskaton residence on September 6, 1996, who was present, and why the death was described as suicide. CID plans to compare a 1997 statement recorded under Section 164, allegations involving a 1.2 million taka agreement, earlier investigation reports and claims by the actor’s family. Prosecutors say the statement mentioned an alleged murder plan, involvement of several people and financial transactions.

Earlier CID, judicial and PBI inquiries concluded that Salman Shah died by suicide, findings his family challenged. On October 20, 2025, a court ordered the unnatural-death case converted into a murder case, and 11 people were named the next day. CID said Don could be questioned in custody if needed. The next deadline for the investigation report is August 30.
