The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is set to form the government for the fourth time after winning a landslide victory in the 13th national parliamentary election, held after two decades out of power. According to unofficial results from 299 constituencies, BNP candidates have secured 213 seats, while Jamaat-e-Islami has won 71. The National Citizens Party (NCP) captured six seats, and independents and others won 11. BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman achieved sweeping victories in both Dhaka-17 and Bogura-6 constituencies, while Jamaat chief Shafiqur Rahman won in Dhaka-15.

BNP last formed a government in 2001 under Khaleda Zia, whose tenure ended in 2006. Following her death on December 30, the party’s standing committee formally recognized Tarique Rahman as chairman on January 9. Having returned from 17 years abroad in November 2025, Tarique contested his first national election this year. The party had earlier announced that he would become the next prime minister if BNP came to power.

For the first time, Jamaat-e-Islami and its 11-party alliance will serve as the main opposition in parliament, marking a new political alignment in Bangladesh.
