Six individuals were detained by the 13th Armed Police Battalion (APBn) at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on June 10, 2026, for possessing approximately 597.3 grams of gold jewelry. The suspects—identified as Md. Monir Hossain, Kazi Masud, Saidul Islam, Iliyas Khan, Sabbir Mia, and Md. Kamal Hossain—were apprehended near the airport’s public parking area after attempting to flee in a microbus. The recovered gold, valued at about Tk 9.44 million, was confirmed to be 22-carat.
According to APBn, the detainees admitted that the jewelry had been smuggled into Bangladesh through unidentified passengers from various countries. Investigators believe the group acted as receivers for a long-running gold smuggling syndicate operating around the airport. A regular case has been filed at the Airport Police Station under Section 25B(1)(b) of the Special Powers Act, 1974.
APBn Superintendent Mohammad Rezaul Kabir stated that the unit remains committed to preventing smuggling and other illegal activities at the airport, with ongoing operations and intelligence surveillance to curb such crimes.
