A Dhaka court has ordered that Mehedi Hasan be sent to jail in connection with a case over setting fire to copies of the Islamic commentary book 'Tafheemul Quran' near Dhaka University. The order was issued on Friday, July 10, 2026, by Metropolitan Magistrate Albiruni Mir. The investigating officer was directed to submit the investigation report by August 17. The Shahbagh police sub-inspector Nazmul Hasan requested that the accused be kept in custody until the investigation is completed, citing the need for a fair inquiry.
According to the case details, the incident took place late Thursday night near the Raju Sculpture area, where three volumes of 'Tafheemul Quran' by Syed Abul A'la Maududi were burned. Locals detained the suspect at the scene, accusing him of hurting religious sentiments. Police from the Nilkhet outpost took him into custody and provided initial medical treatment after he sustained minor injuries from the crowd.
A case was filed under Section 295-A of the Penal Code by Sub-Inspector Kamal Uddin Mia of the Nilkhet police outpost at Shahbagh Police Station.
