The Election Commission (EC) has finalized a proposal to amend the law governing five tiers of local government elections in Bangladesh. Under the proposed changes, MPO-listed teachers, guarantors of loan defaulters, individuals with unpaid utility bills such as electricity or water, and dual citizens will be deemed ineligible to contest in local government elections. The announcement was made by EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed during a briefing following the commission’s 12th meeting on Tuesday.

According to the EC, these recommendations will soon be forwarded to the Local Government Division for further action. The proposed amendments aim to tighten eligibility criteria for candidates in local elections, ensuring compliance with financial and citizenship standards.

If approved, the new rules would introduce stricter disqualification measures that could significantly affect the pool of eligible candidates in upcoming local government elections.
