Law enforcement agencies have strengthened security across the Baridhara and Gulshan diplomatic areas of Dhaka after two foreign embassies received threatening emails. Dhaka Metropolitan Police Diplomatic Security Division Deputy Commissioner Abu Khayer confirmed the development on Sunday, according to the report published on August 23, 2026. The emails targeted the Chinese and Russian embassies in Dhaka.

Abu Khayer said authorities did not know where the emails originated and believed they were likely a scam or fake. He said the foreign embassies informed Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in line with procedure. The ministry then notified Police Headquarters and the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit.

Following the notifications, law enforcement agencies increased monitoring in areas around the embassies and reinforced existing security arrangements. Abu Khayer said his office had not received an official communication directly from the embassies, but acted after learning of the matter. He added that authorities did not currently believe there was any such imminent threat. No general diary entry or written complaint had been filed with a police station over the emails.
