Police arrested Anwar Hossain Titu, 31, after an alleged armed extortion incident at an expatriate’s home in Haq Mansion, Maijdee, Noakhali. The raid was conducted around 4:30pm on Tuesday in Ward No. 1 of Noakhali municipality. Police said Titu and three others were involved, but the three companions fled during the operation.
Police seized a foreign pistol, a magazine containing five rounds of ammunition, 40 yaba tablets, Tk27,000, two mobile phones and two motorcycles allegedly used in the incident. Titu was found in a suspicious condition on the building’s stairs, according to police. Police said he has seven cases at Begumganj police station involving weapons, explosives, drugs, theft and injury.
Victim Naima Akter, 18, and her family told police that Titu entered their fourth-floor residence with two associates about an hour before the police arrived. They alleged the group demanded Tk1 million at gunpoint, threatened family members with death, forced signatures on blank stamp papers and took Tk27,000 from the home. Police said three cases involving weapons, drugs and extortion were being processed, and efforts continued to arrest two fugitives.
