In 1991, India’s former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by the LTTE in a suicide bombing. The roots of this attack trace back to the 1987 Indo-Sri Lanka Peace Accord, signed during Gandhi’s tenure, which the LTTE saw as a betrayal. India’s deployment of peacekeepers and pressure on Tamil rebels to disarm angered the LTTE. Gandhi's continued support for the accord in 1991 further provoked the group, leading to his assassination—an event that deeply impacted India-Sri Lanka ties and regional politics.
