A Jamalpur court on Thursday sentenced seven people to death and seven others to life imprisonment in the murder case of an uncle and his nephew in Madarganj. Additional District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Nezam Uddin delivered the verdict at the Jamalpur District and Sessions Judge Court. Each death-row convict was fined Tk50,000, while each person given life imprisonment was fined Tk20,000.

According to state prosecutor Mohammad Didarul Islam, Shakhawat and Sohel called Maher Ali and his nephew Swapan Mia from their home on the night of May 16, 2016, saying there would be music. The two were then taken to a jute field belonging to Bhanu Fakir in Kukurmari, Jorkhali ইউনিয়ন of Madarganj, where they were hacked and slaughtered to death.

Police recovered the mutilated bodies from the jute field three days later. Swapan's father, Jahangir Alam, filed a murder case at Madarganj Model Police Station on May 19, 2016, naming 22 accused. After a lengthy investigation, police submitted charges against 14 people. The court announced the verdict in the presence of the accused after hearing testimony from 18 witnesses.
