Muslim politician Zohran Mamdani has made history by defeating former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and several other candidates in the June 24 primary. He is now the Democratic nominee for the upcoming New York City mayoral election in November. Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist, is the son of renowned Ugandan academic Mahmood Mamdani and Indian filmmaker Mira Nair. A vocal critic of Israel's military actions, Mamdani supports the BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) movement.
