The Appellate Division has overturned the death sentence handed to Jamaat-e-Islami leader ATM Azharul Islam in a war crimes case. The verdict was delivered on Tuesday by a seven-member bench led by Chief Justice Dr. Syed Refaat Ahmed. Defense counsel Shishir Monir stated, “First, we thank Allah. He has been completely acquitted of all charges. This was injustice in the name of justice.” Following the ruling, there are now no legal barriers to Azharul Islam's release.
