Former student leader Chowdhury Rubel, 30, died while receiving treatment at the capital’s Pangu Hospital after a dump truck collided with a CNG-powered autorickshaw in Lakshmipur. He died early Monday, following the crash at about 9:30pm on Sunday near the Youth Development Directorate on the Majuchowdhurirhat road in the town.

Local sources said Rubel was a passenger in the CNG autorickshaw when a speeding dump truck ran it over. He suffered severe injuries to his arms, legs and head, and was rescued and admitted to the hospital. Rubel was a former president of the Jankalyan High School unit of Chhatra Dal in Lakshmipur municipality.

He was the eldest son of Faruk Hossain Chowdhury of Banchanagar in ward 4 of the municipality. Akbar Hossain Munna, joint convener of the district Chhatra Dal, confirmed the death citing Rubel’s brother, former Chhatra Dal leader Sharif Hossain Chowdhury. Munna expressed condolences on behalf of Chhatra Dal. Calls seeking comment from Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge Wahid Parvez were not answered.
