Iran’s official news agency IRNA has confirmed the deaths of two senior figures, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Commander-in-Chief Mohammad Pakpour and Defense Council Secretary Ali Shamkhani, following attacks by the United States and Israel. The confirmation was reported on Sunday by BBC Bangla.
Mohammad Pakpour had been appointed as IRGC Commander-in-Chief in June 2025 after his predecessor was killed during the 12-day Iran-Israel war. Before assuming that role, he led the IRGC’s ground forces for 16 years and previously commanded armored units during the Iran-Iraq war. After the conflict, he served as commander of the Najaf Ashraf 8th Division and the Ashura 31st Division. Shamkhani, who also served as a senior adviser to Iran’s supreme religious leader during the Iran-Iraq war, was among those sanctioned by the United States.
Both Pakpour and Shamkhani were under US sanctions at the time of their deaths, according to the report.
