Lieutenant General Mohammad Asadullah Minhajul Alam met Prime Minister Tareq Rahman at the Prime Minister’s Office in Dhaka before departing to assume his new role as Force Commander of the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Cyprus (UNFICYP). The meeting took place on Wednesday afternoon at the Cabinet Division, with the Prime Minister’s Defence Adviser Brigadier General (Retd.) A.K.M. Shamsul Islam also present. Minhajul Alam is scheduled to leave for New York on June 5 to complete official formalities before taking charge in Cyprus.

During the meeting, discussions focused on Bangladesh’s contributions to UN peacekeeping operations, the professionalism of its armed forces, and their international reputation. Minhajul Alam will be the eighth Bangladeshi military officer to serve as a UN Force Commander, continuing a legacy of leadership in global peace missions. Currently, Major General Md Fakhrul Ahsan serves as Force Commander in Western Sahara.

Bangladesh remains one of the top contributors to UN peacekeeping missions, and Minhajul Alam’s appointment is seen as a continuation of the country’s distinguished record in international peace operations.
