Somali pirates seized the Cameroon-flagged cargo ship Lutfu off Somalia’s Puntland coast earlier this week, with at least six Indian sailors among its 10 crew members. According to an Associated Press report, the vessel was captured on Monday about 3.5 nautical miles from the Maraiya coast in Puntland’s Eyl district. The ship also carried a Turkish citizen, a Georgian citizen and two Serbian security guards.

An unnamed Somali official said the vessel was carrying weapons intended for a Turkish military training centre in Mogadishu, along with communications and satellite equipment. The official, who withheld their identity because of the sensitivity of the information, said eight pirates took control of the ship. It was subsequently moved toward the coast near Garmal in Puntland’s Dangorayo district.

The ship is owned by Polar Movement Shipping. The official believed the same pirates may previously have hijacked another commercial vessel, Sword, on April 26. No detailed information has been released on the condition of the crew or whether the pirates have made any demands. Indian and Turkish authorities had not issued formal statements on the incident.
