Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy called on the international community to adopt a united and firm stance toward Israel to implement a proposed peace plan aimed at ending the war in Gaza. Speaking in Cairo on August 19, 2026, he said Israel’s current position was obstructing mediation efforts and prolonging the Gaza crisis.
Fahmy welcomed a joint statement by eight Arab and Islamic countries condemning Israel for rejecting a plan proposed by US President Donald Trump. He said Israel and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appeared to be seeking to obstruct mediation for peace, while continued military operations in Gaza were further complicating the situation. More than two million Palestinians in Gaza have faced a humanitarian crisis since 2023, according to the report.
He said Hamas had accepted the proposed plan’s terms, while Israel had failed to fulfill its responsibilities, placing responsibility for the impasse on the Israeli government. Fahmy urged the United States, described as a sponsor of the agreement, to pressure parties blocking implementation and called for a rapid move to the plan’s second phase. The eight countries also urged full implementation to address Gaza’s humanitarian crisis, restore security and stability, and begin reconstruction.
