CID is preparing to seek remand of actor Ashraful Haque, known as Don, after his arrest in the murder case over the 1996 death of popular actor Salman Shah. Don was arrested at Shahjalal International Airport on 9 August while travelling to Saudi Arabia and was sent to jail by court order. His bail petition was rejected by a Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate on 12 August. CID Inspector Mujibur Rahman has taken over as the new investigation officer and is reviewing decades-old case files, statements and evidence.
Investigators may question Don about his whereabouts on 5 and 6 September 1996, his last contact with Salman Shah, and his relationships with named accused including Samira Haque, Rezvi Ahmed, David and Faruk. CID also plans to re-examine allegations in state witness Rezvi Ahmed’s Section 164 statement concerning an alleged Tk 1.2 million transaction.
CID says the inquiry may extend beyond the 11 named accused to other suspected or influential individuals if needed. The court last set 30 August as the deadline for the investigation report, after eight previous extensions. Salman Shah died at his Eskaton residence on 6 September 1996.
