The National Citizen Party (NCP) has alleged that a conspiracy is under way to hand Bangladesh’s energy sector to identified mafia business groups, putting the state and public hostage. In a joint statement published on August 10, 2026, NCP convener Nahid Islam and member secretary Akhtar Hossain called the alleged initiative anti-national and against public interest. The party warned it would mobilize people for a strong street movement if the plan is not stopped.

Citing recent investigative media reports, the statement said a controversial business group accused of loan fraud, bank looting and money laundering was being prepared to control a major share of national petroleum trade. NCP alleged that legal obligations and state rules were being disregarded, describing the process as a threat to national security and sovereignty.

The party said the rapid formation of an inquiry committee, removal of the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation chairman and preparation of a policy draft indicated unusual haste. It demanded immediate cancellation of the alleged privatization policy and process, and called for full state management and control of the energy sector. NCP also said the power and energy sectors should be returned to complete state ownership and control.
