A human chain was held at Chittagong University demanding that a residential hall be named after A.K.M. Fazlul Kader Chowdhury. The programme, organized under the banner “Students-Guardians,” took place at the university’s Zero Point at 11:30am on Monday. After the event, participants submitted a memorandum containing the demand to Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohammad Al Forkan.

Politician and social worker Mohammad Ali Suman moderated the programme, while former Chittagong District Teachers Association president Abu Jafar Chowdhury attended as chief guest. Politicians, social workers, student leaders, students, guardians, conscious citizens and people from different professions joined the human chain. Several speakers addressed the gathering.

Speakers said Chowdhury, as central education minister, formally initiated efforts to establish a university in Chittagong in 1962. They said he ordered the university’s relocation from Cumilla to Chittagong in 1963, and funding was approved in 1964. They urged the university to name a residential hall after him before this year’s University Day on November 18, citing preservation of the founder’s memory and accurate presentation of the institution’s history.
