Opposition Chief Whip Nahid Islam called for the Awami League to be tried as a political party before an international tribunal, alleging its involvement in mass killings and destruction of democratic institutions in Bangladesh. Speaking in parliament on Tuesday during a discussion under Rule 68 about the July uprising and related killings, he said those responsible for the July events must face justice. The proposal was introduced by NCP lawmaker Akhtar Hossain.

Nahid Islam, also the NCP convener, accused the Awami League and Indian media of defaming the July uprising and criticized some ruling party members for questioning the movement’s legitimacy. He also raised concerns over the removal of the tribunal’s chief prosecutor, saying no explanation was provided. He questioned the government’s plans to appoint skilled prosecutors and expand tribunals to ensure timely trials.

Akhtar Hossain cited a UN report alleging that the Awami League committed crimes against humanity in July 2024 and urged the government to bring Sheikh Hasina and others accused back to Bangladesh to enforce verdicts. He demanded immediate steps to initiate a party-level trial of the Awami League.
