Haakon VIII has become Norway’s new king following the death of his father, King Harald V. The 53-year-old ascended to the throne on Friday as successor to Harald V, who died aged 89 after a 35-year reign.

Norway’s royal family released an official photograph of the new monarch, showing King Haakon VIII in military uniform. Harald V had taken the Norwegian throne in 1991 and remained king until his death.

Norway is a constitutional monarchy, where the king’s authority is mainly ceremonial. However, the monarch has an important role in various state and nationally significant events. King Haakon VIII will perform those responsibilities as his father’s successor.
