Bangladesh’s Special Branch police has told 3,112 Indian nationals whose visas have expired to leave the country quickly or renew their visas, according to a report published on August 10, 2026. The report said 18,453 Indian citizens are legally living in Bangladesh, while the 3,112 individuals have remained after their visa validity ended. Police said those who do not renew their status have no alternative but to return to India.

The report said many of the visa-overstayers work in garment factories, multinational companies, power plants, telecommunications, information technology, educational institutions and private businesses. Police sources said overstaying is particularly common among holders of visa-on-arrival, tourist and business visas. Security expert Air Commodore (Retd.) Ishfaq Elahi Chowdhury called for stronger administrative action to identify illegal foreign nationals and send them back to their countries.

Foreign nationals may remain for the first 15 days after visa expiry by paying a daily fine of Tk1,000, followed by Tk2,000 daily up to 90 days and Tk3,000 daily thereafter. Police have urged renewal for some workers in ongoing projects, power plants, IT and telecom sectors because their immediate departure could disrupt work. Cases may be filed under the Foreigners Act, 1964.
