Rangpur Metropolitan Police said they arrested two people over the deaths of retired teacher Ganapati Chakraborty, his wife and their two children at their home in Machhuapara, Rangpur. Police Commissioner Abdul Mabud disclosed the information on Sunday afternoon. The bodies of Ganapati, 65, his wife Pritilata, 50, daughter Prarthi, 25, and son Priyam, 12, were recovered from the house on Saturday night.

According to the commissioner, Siddhartha Das and Mugdha Das were consuming drugs on the rooftop on Thursday night when Ganapati stopped them. Police alleged that the two killed him and subsequently killed the other three family members as they came forward. Police said the suspects later bathed at the house, ate dates and cucumber, consumed yaba and fled with gold jewellery when roads were quiet around Friday prayers.

Police said the house was disturbed and two mobile phones submerged in water to portray the incident as a robbery. Some of the stolen jewellery has been recovered, and Ganapati’s brother Gopinath filed a murder case at Kotwali police station. Political leaders, residents, students and organisations demanded a proper investigation and prosecution of the actual perpetrators.
