A teenage auto-rickshaw driver died while undergoing treatment at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital after being assaulted over a 50 taka charging fee dispute in Jagannathpur, Sunamganj. The incident occurred on the night of March 24 at Badsha Mia’s garage in the Syedpur (Ishankona) area. The victim, Imran Hossain, 16, from Dhohalia Union’s Bhabanipur village, had lived with his family as tenants in Syedpur for several years.
According to local and police sources, the dispute began when Imran tried to pay 50 taka less for charging his auto-rickshaw. Garage owner Badsha Mia and his associate Zakir allegedly attacked him with a GI pipe, hammer, and wooden sticks. Severely injured, Imran was first taken to Jagannathpur Upazila Health Complex and later transferred to Sylhet, where he died four days later on Friday morning.
Police arrested Zakir from his home on Friday afternoon, while main suspect Badsha Mia remains at large. The victim’s father has filed a case, and police say efforts to arrest the remaining accused are ongoing.
