Eight workers were burned in a fire at a steel mill in the Shyampur area of Dhaka’s Kadamtali on Wednesday morning. The incident occurred around 9 a.m. while iron melting work was underway at the RMM Steel Mill in the Dhaka Match area. The injured workers were rescued by colleagues and taken to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery for treatment.
According to Dr. Shawon Bin Rahman, a resident physician at the institute, the burn percentages among the victims ranged from 4 to 40 percent. Md. Hira suffered 17 percent burns, Md. Khalilur Rahman 9 percent, Md. Rojob Ali 4 percent, Motiur Rahman 10 percent, Md. Arshad Mia 11 percent, Md. Liton Mia 7 percent, Md. Manik Mia 40 percent, and Yusuf Mia 5 percent. Hira and Manik have been admitted to the hospital, while the remaining six are under observation.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the cause of the fire or the current condition of the admitted workers.
