Rangpur Metropolitan Police said they detained two people over the killings of retired teacher and homeopathic practitioner Ganapati Chakraborty and three relatives at their home in the Daspara-Machhuapara area of Rangpur city. Police recovered the bodies of Ganapati, his wife Pritilata, daughter Prarthi and 12-year-old son Priyam from the two-storey house at about 11:30pm on Saturday.

At a Sunday press conference, Police Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Mabud identified the detainees as Mugdha Das and Siddhartha Das, relatives from the same area. Police said one works as a goldsmith. Investigators allege the two entered through a neighbouring under-construction house, used yaba on the roof, and killed the four family members after an altercation.

Police said the detainees admitted during questioning that they remained in the house for six to seven hours, bathed, ate dates and cucumber, and left with gold jewellery. Officers said jewellery was recovered from an abandoned area behind a temple based on their information. Ganapati's brother filed a case against unidentified people and called for a proper investigation.
