Taiwan’s Coast Guard has reported a significant increase in Chinese vessels operating near the island’s waters in June 2026, amid growing pressure from Beijing. According to the agency, 263 Chinese ships, including coast guard, rescue, and research vessels, were detected around Taiwan and nearby islands last month, up from 200 in May and 171 in June 2025. The figures exclude warships. Officials described the surge as part of intensified “grey zone harassment” tactics.

A Taiwanese Coast Guard officer said the number and types of Chinese government vessels involved in such operations had risen notably. China also launched “law enforcement” patrols in Taiwan’s eastern waters, which Taipei labeled as “provocative” and “disguised expansionism.” During these operations, Chinese coast guard ships reportedly radioed commercial vessels near Taiwan to request information about their crews and destinations.

Taiwanese authorities indicated that live drills would be conducted to prepare for potential quarantine or blockade scenarios, though no further details were provided.
