Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) achieved a landslide victory in the February 12 parliamentary election, winning two-thirds of the seats and gaining the mandate to form a government on its own. According to results announced from the central level, BNP won 207 out of 296 declared constituencies, while the Jamaat-e-Islami-led 11-party alliance secured 77 seats, including six for the National Citizens Party (NCP). Independent candidates won seven seats. The election was held alongside a national referendum, in which over 75 percent of votes reportedly supported the ‘Yes’ option.

The 13th parliamentary election was conducted peacefully across 299 constituencies, with voting suspended in Sherpur-3 due to a candidate’s death. Voter turnout was 61 percent, according to the Election Commission. BNP Chairperson Tarique Rahman contested two constituencies—Bogura-6 and Dhaka-17—and won both, while Jamaat Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman won in Dhaka-15. Interim government Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus praised the election as the most peaceful and festive in the country’s history.

BNP expressed gratitude to the Election Commission, armed forces, and law enforcement agencies for ensuring a fair election, while Jamaat described it as a unique event in Bangladesh’s political history.
