Bangladesh’s opposition parties have demanded in Parliament that the Awami League be tried as a political organization for crimes against humanity. During a discussion under Rule 68 on July 14, 2026, opposition members called for immediate steps to implement verdicts from the international tribunal and to bring back former leader Sheikh Hasina, sentenced to death for genocide, to face justice. They also urged the government to clarify Bangladesh’s position regarding India’s sheltering of Hasina.

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed confirmed that investigations against the Awami League are ongoing and stated that Hasina would be arrested immediately if she returns to the country. He emphasized constitutional reforms to prevent future authoritarianism and announced the opening of a July Museum on August 5. Law Minister Asaduzzaman reported that 16 investigations have been completed, with 12 reports submitted and several cases already adjudicated.

Opposition leaders, including Shafiqul Rahman and Nahid Islam, reiterated demands for justice for victims of the July uprising and criticized media and foreign interference. They called for national unity to ensure accountability and prevent the resurgence of fascism in Bangladesh.
