A high-level delegation led by Sergio Gore, the US president’s special envoy for South and Central Asia, arrived in the Rohingya refugee camps in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, on Friday afternoon. The delegation is set to inspect humanitarian activities and projects in the camps and speak directly with Rohingya refugees about living conditions, security, education, healthcare and other humanitarian concerns.

According to sources, the delegation will also exchange views with officials from UN agencies and international humanitarian organisations. Their discussions are expected to cover the current state of the Rohingya crisis, international assistance and issues related to repatriation. Gore had arrived in Dhaka on Thursday afternoon and later met Foreign Affairs Adviser Dr Khalilur Rahman at the state guest house Padma.

Bangladesh-US bilateral relations, the Rohingya crisis and strengthening international cooperation received importance at that meeting. The foreign affairs adviser said relations with the current government have been positive and are becoming stronger, while Bangladesh also called for increased US humanitarian assistance for Rohingyas. APBn commander Riaz Uddin Ahmed said maximum security measures were taken in the camp area for the visit, coordinated with other law-enforcement agencies.
