Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Mohammad Ejaz announced that 220 kilometers of canals across the capital will be excavated and cleared within this year to mitigate waterlogging.

According to CS records, the total length of canals in Dhaka once stood at approximately 340 kilometers, but 120 kilometers have since been buried under roads and other infrastructure. "In the past three months alone, we have managed to restore flow in 108 kilometers of canals," said Ejaz. "We are optimistic that the remaining 112 kilometers can be recovered and excavated by year’s end."

He added that the primary objective is to increase water flow to reduce urban flooding, especially during the monsoon. Environmental lawyer Syeda Rizwana Hasan is leading the initiative. Despite limited funding, Ejaz claimed the DNCC has been able to carry out the work effectively and economically.
