Child Hafsa, 8, and her uncle Anwar Hossain Shahin, 25, have died after suffering burns in an explosion caused by a gas leak in Bhatara, Dhaka. Hafsa died on Thursday night and Shahin died on Friday morning while receiving treatment in the intensive care unit of the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery. Residential surgeon Dr Shawon Bin Rahman confirmed the deaths.

The explosion occurred at dawn on Tuesday, 21 July, on the ground floor of a house in the Notun Bazar 100-foot area under Bhatara police station. Three members of the same family were seriously burned and taken to the burn institute by relatives. Hafsa had burns over about 40 percent of her body and Shahin over about 50 percent. Shahin’s wife, Fahima Akhtar, suffered burns over about 45 percent of her body and remains in critical condition in the ICU. Shahin worked at a clothing shop in the capital and had moved into the rented Bhatara home after marrying about six months earlier.
