A 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck northeastern Japan late Monday night, injuring at least 30 people and forcing around 90,000 residents to evacuate. The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that the quake’s epicenter was about 80 kilometers off the coast of Aomori and 50 kilometers deep under the sea. A tsunami warning was briefly issued but later lifted after waves of up to 70 centimeters were observed along coastal areas.

The quake disrupted train services and cut power to roughly 2,700 homes. Authorities warned of potential aftershocks in the coming days and urged residents to remain on high alert for at least a week. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi advised citizens to review their earthquake preparedness and ensure household safety measures. The government activated an emergency response office to coordinate rescue and relief operations.

No irregularities were detected at the Higashidori and Onagawa nuclear power plants, and the decommissioned Fukushima facility remained stable, according to government reports to the International Atomic Energy Agency. The event revived memories of the devastating 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami that killed over 18,000 people.
