A Gopalganj court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for killing his father in 2023. The verdict was delivered on Tuesday afternoon by District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Shamsul Haque. In addition to life imprisonment, the convict was fined 20,000 taka, with an additional six months in jail in case of non-payment.

According to the case details, on May 13, 2023, in the Char Manikdah Kazi’s Bazar area of Gopalganj Sadar upazila, drug addict Alim Kazi attacked his father, Ismail Kazi, with a machete after being told to stop using abusive language. Ismail Kazi was taken to Gopalganj 250-bed General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The victim’s other son, Selim Kazi, later filed a murder case.

Following police investigation and witness testimony, the court handed down the sentence in the presence of the accused. Advocate M. M. Julkadar represented the prosecution, while Advocate Abu Taleb Sheikh defended the accused.
