A seven-year-old girl named Nandini Rani was found dead in a maize field in Lalmonirhat’s Aditmari upazila, a day after she went missing. Police recovered her body, which had been placed in a sack and buried underground. The discovery triggered widespread anger and tension in the area. Locals alleged that the child was sexually assaulted before being killed, though police said the cause of death would be confirmed after the autopsy report.
Following the incident, enraged residents set fire to the house of a neighbor, Bidhan Chandra, suspected of involvement. Several rooms and belongings were destroyed before the fire service brought the blaze under control. Police and Border Guard Bangladesh personnel were deployed to restore order, but clashes broke out, damaging several police vehicles and injuring at least ten people, including officers, journalists, and locals.
The local officer-in-charge, Nazmul Haque, was withdrawn from duty for alleged negligence in recording the family’s missing person complaint. Police have launched an investigation to determine the motive and identify those responsible.
