At least 35 people were killed and several others injured in a drone strike on a court in Gara al-Jawiya village in Sudan's North Darfur state, according to the rights group Emergency Lawyers. The group said the Sudanese army carried out the attack at about 1 p.m. local time on Sunday, while civilians had gathered to attend court hearings. The village is under the control of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, or RSF.

Emergency Lawyers said the strike also damaged the traditional court building used to settle local and tribal disputes. An unnamed local witness told AFP that court proceedings involving community leaders were being held under a tree. The witness said four tribal chiefs and two RSF commanders were among those killed.

Gara al-Jawiya is near Kabkabiya, about 150 kilometres west of El-Fasher, described as the army's last stronghold in Darfur before the RSF captured it last October after a bloody operation. Since fighting began in April 2023 between supporters of RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo and army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, thousands have been killed. UN investigators have said RSF violence around El-Fasher's siege and capture showed clear signs of genocide.
