Several days of persistent rain have severely damaged sections of the Barishal-Dhaka highway, creating numerous potholes and uneven, wave-like surfaces. The Gournadi section, described as the gateway to Barishal, is in the most fragile condition. A report published on August 8, 2026 said passenger and freight vehicles are facing accidents almost daily while attempting to avoid the holes, causing vehicle damage, travel hardship and reported loss of life.

Damage was observed from Natullabad bus stand in Barishal city to Gariarpar, around Sanuhar in Uzirpur, and across roughly 19 kilometres from the Uzirpur boundary to Bhurghata bus stand in Gournadi. Large potholes in the middle of the road near Sanuhar, Gournadi and Torki bus stands have made movement especially risky. Residents said brick-filled potholes quickly break down into mud under heavy vehicles.

Drivers said potholes damage engines, tyres and tubes, while passengers face severe inconvenience. Gournadi Fire Service station officer Md. Mizanur Rahman called for rapid expansion and durable repairs. Roads and Highways sub-assistant engineer Md. Shahin Khan said repairs are being attempted regularly, but cannot last during continued rain; permanent work will begin after the rain stops.
