Debate over political appointments in Bangladesh’s public administration and state institutions has revived discussion of adopting aspects of a US-style administrative model. A report published on August 2, 2026 said the recent appointment of BNP leaders to top posts at 12 government agencies, boards and corporations added momentum to the debate. Concerns cited in the report include contract appointments, bribery, irregularities and delays in implementing government policies and programmes.

Professor Sirajul I. Bhuiyan of Savannah State University said political appointments in the United States are based on merit, qualifications, experience and skills, with Senate approval required for many posts. Political analyst Dr Wazed Khan also described broad appointments to policymaking positions and approval processes in the United States. State Minister for Public Administration Abdul Bari declined to comment on whether Bangladesh was moving toward that model, while saying the government sought an efficient, public-friendly administration.

Former cabinet secretary Ali Imam Majumdar warned that broad political appointments could make the administration more controversial. Transparency International Bangladesh executive director Dr Iftekharuzzaman called such appointments worrying and alleged that a culture of partisan control persisted. The report also cited service recipients and experts alleging continuing bribery, stalled files and administrative inefficiency.
