Bangladesh’s Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said the government fears former inspector general of police Benazir Ahmed may hold a passport from another country, as it moves to seek cancellation of his conditional bail in the United Arab Emirates. Speaking to journalists at the Secretariat on Monday, the minister said the government is pursuing the matter through the court.

Ahmed said the government learned of the bail on Sunday afternoon. A UAE court granted Benazir bail on the condition that he not leave the country. The minister said he did not want to comment on the court’s decision without complete information about it.

The government has informed its appointed law firm, while the Bangladesh government’s secretary has spoken with the ambassador in the UAE, Ahmed said. Officials have been instructed to obtain a certified copy detailing the bail conditions. The law firm has also been directed to submit documents concerning Benazir’s return to Bangladesh to the court, with the aim of quickly applying for cancellation of his bail.
