National Citizen Party (NCP) spokesperson and election committee chairman Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan has alleged that around one thousand NCP leaders and activists have been injured in attacks by supporters of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and the banned Awami League since the day of the 13th national parliamentary election. He made the statement on Saturday evening while visiting injured NCP members receiving treatment at Ibn Sina Hospital in Kalyanpur, Dhaka, who were reportedly attacked in Hatiya, Noakhali, on election day.

Asif Mahmud accused the BNP of coming to power with Awami League’s support under a rehabilitation condition and claimed that an understanding exists between the two parties. He said dissenting citizens are facing repression, which the BNP is allegedly enjoying. He urged the BNP to stop the violence and take action against those responsible. Drawing a comparison, he remarked that the current post-election violence resembles the unrest seen after disputed elections during the Awami League’s tenure.

Regarding the new government’s oath-taking, Asif Mahmud stated that India remains a major obstacle to establishing democracy in Bangladesh and suggested that the Indian Prime Minister should not be invited to the ceremony.
