Courts in four districts of Bangladesh have sentenced nine people to death and two others to life imprisonment in separate rape and murder cases. In Jamalpur, seven men were given the death penalty for gang-raping a housewife, while one accused was acquitted. In Khagrachhari, a tribunal sentenced one man to death for raping a second-grade madrasa student, marking the first verdict since the tribunal’s formation. In Noakhali, a man was sentenced to death for raping and killing his cousin, a child named Asma Akter. Meanwhile, the High Court in Shariatpur overturned two death sentences in a 2019 case involving the rape and murder of a fifth-grade student, acquitting two and sentencing two others to life imprisonment.

The verdicts were delivered on Monday by different courts and tribunals across the districts. Prosecutors in Khagrachhari expressed satisfaction with the swift judgment, noting that it was delivered within just over eleven months of the incident. The rulings were based on witness testimonies and evidence presented during the trials.

These judgments highlight ongoing judicial actions against sexual violence and child abuse cases in Bangladesh, with courts emphasizing accountability and timely justice.
