Justice Md. Akhtaruzzaman, who sentenced former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia to five years in prison in the Zia Orphanage Trust case, has resigned.
The judge had earlier been placed on leave after allegations of misconduct surfaced. Summoned by the Supreme Judicial Council on July 1 to explain himself in person, he submitted his resignation to Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed on Sunday. The resignation has since been forwarded to the President.
